: Front Locker?
StoopidMonkey 02-26-2002, 04:54 PM I need help on deciding what front locker i should go with. Im debating between, True Track, Lock right, or Power Lok. People say the lock right doesnt disengage very often so up front its not the best choice, but its cheap and easy. Ive heard good things about the True Trak, and the Power lok i hear is the best to run as far as a posi goes. It is a D44 axle, also this rig is my daily driver during winter and rainy days so i dont want to weld, or spool it, and i cant afford an ARB. I will be running 35s, possibly 36s in the future. Any help or info on any of these would be appreciated. Thanks
offroadr35 02-26-2002, 04:59 PM detroit and a twin stick for the tcase.

Nobody 02-26-2002, 05:03 PM DON'T by a lockright.....It will break, and when it does, powertrax will not back up their product unless they absolutely have to. They will try and find every excuse in the book to not warranty their product. They will glady sell you replacement pieces though.
:flipoff: Yeah Fawk YOU powertrax :flipoff:
As for the winter commute, If you're concerned about the effects of a front locker, you're driving too fast . Get a detroit and be done with it.
High5 02-26-2002, 05:18 PM nothing but a full detroit for the front of my rig :D
Hayraker 02-26-2002, 06:57 PM I say get a lockright or something similar that is cheap for a 44, because sooner or later you will want to swap in a 60, and then you can buy a detroit for it.
I have a lockright and it works great, disengages fine, and as for the warranty it is a lot better than the one for the detroit ez locker. I have talked to people that had their lockright warrantied with no problems.

I'm not quite sure if I agree with that Matt. I've experimented with my lockers in and out in snowy and icy conditions on the street. The truck is definately more stable and easier to handle with open diffs under those conditions.
put a cheap mini spool in it for wheeling in the summer and put the spiders back in for the winter if you are that concerned. the bonus is you will constantly be taking the axle apart and you get good enuff to replace those broken u jionts on the trail in 15 minutes, maybe less
Lil Uzi 02-27-2002, 08:28 AM You don't say if you have manual or auto locking front hubs......
It might make a difference on your choice. I may be mistaken, but I don't think you want a Locker - Lockrite or Detroit, if you have auto hubs. .... :)

No, he wouldn't want that with FULL TIME hubs. Either way though, full time or auto, he should convert to manuals. And if they are full time hubs keep the slugs as spares....
Mieser 02-27-2002, 10:51 AM What do you have in the rear?
I would go for the lock-rite over the posi and true-trac. I have run, and many a friend have run lock-rites with good results. With the added traction of a locker in the front I break less than with an open diff and momentum :D
Money not an option I would go detroit or ARB.
later :jeep:
brector 02-27-2002, 11:58 AM Skip the LSD (true-trac) go with a real locker.
44Runner 02-27-2002, 12:22 PM LSDs do suck, i would go for the lockrite. It is cheaper too...
Freshman 02-27-2002, 07:39 PM Get the Detroit Gearless locker. It will let you turn, be soft on the axle and hook up.:roxy:
StoopidMonkey 02-27-2002, 08:26 PM I havent bought a rear yet. Im going with a Spool or a lockright, i need something simple and cheap because i want to upgrade to 31 spline shafts eventually and i dont want to be stuck with a 500 dollar locker that i cant use anymore. Its a D44 front end with manual hubs.
Ramsey Offroad 02-28-2002, 10:52 AM Dude,
Get a Detroit & never look back again!

Well Paul you might be able to go faster, and you think you have more control, but your exploder still stops the same as everyone else. I think that "confidence" gets a lot of people in accidents each year.
If conditions are bad enough that you "need" 4wd, then you "shouldn't" be going so fast that you experience the ill effects of the locker.
I play in the snow quite a bit, and I can't think of a single time that my front locker caused a problem. We hammer along the mountain roads pretty fast sometimes.

I didn't say I was able to go faster. I don't drive faster because I have 4wd. The problem is not in deep snow, it is icy conditions. When the whole road is a sheet of ice or if there are icy patches a locker can get you into the ditch even if you are careful.

Ok you gimp, what kind of drugs do those doctors got you on?
My hubs would be unlocked:flipoff2: If it's sooo damn icey that I can't move in 2wd, then the effects of the front locker would be the least of my worries.
Don't make my pull on your stitches.
BTW- I know what you're saying, my point is the benifits of a front locker far out weigh any drawbacks
Paul Gagnon 02-28-2002, 11:43 PM LOL... ya bastard, no fair picking on sick people. :flipoff2:
Go with hubs and a Detroit. I have heard nothing but bad otherwise...
