that depends on what trans you have.
it'll either be a th700 or a th400. you should be able to adapt a 241c driver drop transfer case behind either one of them, but you'll have to make sure you get the right input gear.
it's a direct bolt in either way, transmission does not have to be replaced.

you can get a 231 for 700r4 from most 4x4 ifs s10 and 1/2 ton pu's

on an 86, does it have the round pattern 205? if so maybe u could be the first one to run a flipped 205. with a little thought about shifters (cable shifters or maybe a lever/linkage setup?) and a new drain plug i think it could work, with minimal mods to the adapter.
u really need to give a bit more info about your powertrain, rig, and what u plan to do with it if u want a specific answer.

231s never came in 1/2 ton trucks, only in s10s. i'd never run one behind a V8 cause you're just asking for trouble then.

Could also use the BW1370, BW4401, or BW4470 that came in the IFS 1-tons. (most are fixed rear yoke, and all are 32-spline input)

chevy never had a driver drop 208. the went by the wayside when the 241 came out along with the independant front suspensions.

why flip a chevy 205? if he has the 32 spline 205, just get a ford one and put the gear in it. but irrc he has a 700-208 combo in that, in which case he just needs the 241 from and 88+ truck

cause he'd have to replace the trans output gear and the 241 is a direct bolt on.
