: 8.8 wheel hop/wobble problem

First, both sets of tires (1 street set + 1 bogger set) have been balanced. Both sets have the same problem.

I looked at my rear wheel and on of them wobbles left and right and the other one wobbles up and down. AT 55 MPH, the wobble gets so annoying I have to slow down.

I jacked up the rig and turned the tires at idle in 3rd gear : The whole rim was wobbling. Not much, but looked like I had a bent rim. I took both tires off and spun the axles: Looked like the flange even had a wobble to it.

I grabbed the flange and moved it up and down, but couldn't move it front to back. Have I wollered out the bearing? Could the center pin be wearing out?

I have had the axles out before to replace the seals.

Went to check on some new wheel bearings: $300! They said its a hub set and yeah, they were $300. I left.

Any Ideas on what could be wrong?

what kind of a truck?

If its a ranger 8.8 bearings are like 20 bucks each at napa and like 4 bucks a seal. Need one for each side. $300 sounds more like a front wheelbearing for a SLA ranger.

What was he talking about.......A Hub. Did he think it was the front?
I cant see him being THAT much of a retard when I said 8.8 out of a 97 exploder......But....People are stupid I'm convinced.

So is your guess wheel bearings?

$300 bucks sounds right for FRONT wheelbearings on a 97 explorer from the dealer. Thats what I bet he was trying to sell you. I go with the parts guy was a moron and was trying to sell you the wrong part. Rear wheel bearings at napa should be around $20 and seals should be about 4 bucks if I remember right.

First off if you told him wheel bearings he might have you were talking about the front. If you'd asked for axle bearings he probably would have given you the right price.

DIAGNOSIS

Bent Housing and a bent axle.....probably from welding perches on the guy said.....I thought I was careful but I guess not careful enough.

Inexperience= $400 bucks

you would have to really build the weld onto that to warp the housing(like filling a 1/2"+ gap).more likely that if you got the rear from a wreck it got bent in the collision.do you know the condition of the donor vehicle?
it's pretty common for the axle to get bent in a crash.

It MAY have been bent when I bought it 2 yrs ago but you would have thunk I would have noticed it sooner  I bought it from a guy in the Bay area - used - out of his Jeep.

But the problem didn't occur (it seems) until 2 months ago.

Who knows.

ok,it didn't say in the thread when you got it,just that you had welded the perches on.i had figured the perches were welded just prior to putting the diff in(recently),then the problem came up.
i still cant see welding the perches warping the tube(i've welded all sorts of mounts onto 8.8 housings for various types of suspensions, never seen one warp)and even then it would not bend the axleshaft.is there and chance that it could have taken a good side hit on a rock or curb?this will bend the shaft fairly easilly.
from what you are describing,a bearing change won't likely fix the problem.when you have the axles out, roll them on a smooth concrete floor-you will see right away if they are bent.

good luck.
