: 2.8L TGV Turbo Diesel into a 89 RRC
snowman75 05-18-2005, 12:01 PM Does anyone know if the 2.8L TGV will bolt up to the stock transmission, and if so will the tranny hold up to the torque?( about 277 ft lbs) If the tranny does not hold up what are some suggestions for a replacement. Any help for the LR newb would be appreciated.
UK Tinker 05-18-2005, 12:30 PM this is a conversion in the uk, i think it does bolt straight on, but i will check for you, as for the torque, well depends how heavy your right foot is...i have a gmc diesel in mine going through a stock 5sp manual, and i do alot of heavy towing, it seems ok at the moment but i wont let my gf drive it as she is hard on the clutch!!!
snowman75 05-18-2005, 01:54 PM Thanks for checking on that for me!
dmarch 05-18-2005, 02:28 PM Yeah dude.

PTSchram 05-18-2005, 03:05 PM Paging Pendy, Pendy, you're needed on aisle one.
He's done a bunch of these conversions.
snowman75 05-18-2005, 03:09 PM dmarch, what LR did you install your engine into? Did you do the install yourself, or did you have Britannica do it for you? If you DIY what problems should I look out for?
1990REDRANGIE 05-18-2005, 03:40 PM this is why I lurk, their diy kit is just what I was looking for. motor swap is now number one on list of mods.

The engine is a direct replacement for the 300tdi, so yes it does bolt up to 'some' rover trannies.

snowman75 05-18-2005, 05:25 PM I have done quite a bit of searching, and I have read through that thread. A lot of good info. I'm glad I caught that bit about Cahill since he was one of the suppliers I was looking into.We are looking into shipping them up directly from Brazil, but if someone in the states already has a line on them please let me know. And I'll continue searching.
Johnny5 05-19-2005, 06:57 AM Jon,
I looked into doing the same (shipping from Brasil to NY), I got a price of U$S4,100 min 10 engines. But then I checked with my customs broker (who imports my parts from the UK for me) and he told me there are EPA and DOT restrictions and sh$t. Plus it looks like Cahill has exclusivity in NA. I was down in SA in Feb and I could not get anyone to talk to me about purchasing the engines there.
M&D in the UK makes kits to adapt to different transmisions.
Feel free to contact me if you need more info.
snowman75 05-19-2005, 10:04 AM We were looking for low mileage used engines, our contact in Brazil says they are a dime a dozen down there. The price is still pretty high, and by the time you had them imported it will cost just as much as a brand new engine. The search continues!
Johnny5 05-19-2005, 10:12 AM Shipping is a piece of cake and very inexpensive by boat (takes 20 days). I'm brinign in my father's 41 Ford and the price for a 20' container is U$S 130 and for a 40' is U$S 160, obviously there are other charges like storage, insurance, freight, etc.... Total price for a 20' is U$S2,034.90 tax included.
We pay around 50 cents a lb for shipments from the UK to NY.
will_warne 05-20-2005, 03:32 PM I run a 2.8 in mine, its been in there for about 10 months now. Its a superb engine but its taken its toll on the gearbox (an R380). Mine does get a fair bit of abuse but the step up in torque just seems a bit much for the box. I'm now going to go ZF4HP24, I think it'll be the only way to make it reliable once I've tuned the engine :D
snowman75 05-20-2005, 04:06 PM Thanks for the input Will!
UPOVR 05-22-2005, 08:28 PM Yeah dude.
Here (http://www.britrest.com/).
$15,500 Canadian! Holy Shiat that is some skrilla for a 135 hp engine. I could by a crate D-max, cummins or whatever for that.
will_warne 05-23-2005, 04:56 AM Yeah, but it'll be a lot more than 135hp after a good tune up :D
pendy 05-23-2005, 08:49 AM My experience is that RRC owners are all talk when it comes to this conversion. What makes you different? Search and come back with real questions.

snowman75 05-23-2005, 02:00 PM At this point nothing makes me any different. I'm just looking for some information, and I have been searching. I thought I asked a pretty direct question in my first post.
White Trash Runner 05-23-2005, 02:22 PM Hey Jon,
Pull your head out of your ass and search you newb. It's all over on this board.

Yeah but will it even come close to the 600+ FtLbs of torque you will get with a brand new crate d-max?
And will all of the parts be available from your local NAPA?
15v CA is kinda nuts for an engine with such limited support in this country.
Seesh I paid a total of 7k for my 6.2, tranny, t-case, and everything rebuilt. 200hp and 300ftlbs.

But reading your story, there's at least $8k worth of thinking, cutting, grinding, welding and bolting in there too.
OBW_Canada 06-03-2005, 02:53 AM Hello Gentlemen
I pop in every now and then to make sure not a lot of disinformation is not floating around.
Just to let the Rover folks know the engine is getting a new backend (Flywheel Housing). This will allow a collection of GM transmissions bolt up to it.
We are looking at 3 months to have the R&D done.
As for the problems in the shipping industry and ann engine going on the milk run
13000 miles that has been fixed by flying them in.
For those interested we are doing the logistics of haveing a container of them come into Baltimore , be cleared and then trucked to their new homes.
Just to let you know on the idea of using LCL out of South America is not 20 days any more.It was 28 days on paper 2 years ago for a container to come to New York.
Hoping all are well

Burn!!! :D
Yeah it was a whole lot of thinking. But that speaks to the skill level of the one doing the conversion
I have seen a couple of other Series/Defender rovers that have gone the same route with much nicer looking results and less headaches.
Plus 15,000 Canadian is what 3000 US?
I think the fact that they are going to be developing a new flywheel housing is pretty cool. Will broaden the appeal of the engine which hopefully relates to <$$
Pete
Dougal 06-05-2005, 06:15 PM So what is this engine originally fitted to?
Bush65 06-06-2005, 01:25 AM So what is this engine originally fitted to?
Some type of light Ford trucks and possibly other Fords used in Brazil.

UPOVR 06-06-2005, 07:16 PM 15,500.00 CAD Canada Dollars = 12,454.63 USD United States Dollars. People aren't seriously considering this conversion are they?
snowman75 06-07-2005, 12:11 PM The engine does not cost 12k, it's actually around 5k U.S.

so it cost $7500 US to install?

No quite a bit more.
Maybe one of Old British Wheels customers will chime in here and tell us what they think it cost them to install.

This is not a Cheap Bastard option in my opinion.
