: 454 to 350

I am running a 78 k5 with a 454, due to recent gas prices (and removing the snowplow) I want to drop a 350 I had built for a 4runner in the k5. After searching the fourms it seems that the 350 will bolt up with the bellhousing with either the th350 or th400. Is my assumption correct? I understand that I will need new starter, flywheel, torque converter. Anything I might be overlooking?

PS. If anyone wants to hear the story about the 4runner I will be happy to tell them.

Thanks
Ian

This conversion is cake.

You can use the same motor mounts, same starter, you will need the correct flywheel. Anyone but for a 400 will work as its externally balanced. Bolts right up to the tranny and the torque converter should be fine. The only gotcha there is that there was a change where the bolts holes are. I had one that was differnet and I just drilled new holes. exhuast manifolds will be different and you exhaust might change.

I went from a 400 to a 454 and it was easy. I'm thinking of going back to a small block in the form of a vortec.

you'll be sorry, I took a 350 out of a sub and put a 454 in and got the same mileage.

Apples to oranges.

Your burb is way heavier than his K5. The 454 has torque required to move the extra weight, where the 350 has to work in a higher RPM range to move it.

Try adding some tech with your opinion, instead of padding your post count. :flipoff2:

Also, the motors can be miles apart. A modern SBC has more HP AND Torque than an older stock 454. Too many variables to qualify your statement.

Yes, the Vortecs really rock the show.

We had a 98 Burb 1500 with a 5.7L Vortec. Motiviated it pretty well.

yea you're right, once I get my post count up with yours I might actually have a clue what I'm doing. Or he could put FI on his bbc to add mpg, but thats just from a newb web wheeler?

Depends on the efi in the scenario, doesn't it?

Seriously, without tech and more knowledge, how can you say he'd be sorry?

Could have a tired assed 454 with 300K miles on it and replacing it with a new crate 350 with nice AFR heads, a serious low end and a decent cam.

OK, so give us some info on the two engines to work with.
'77 4 door Chevy dually 2wd 454 vs. '85 4 door Chevy dually 4x4 350.
The 454 got my Q-jet tuneup. The 350 has an Edelbrock performer setup, CA approved. They get within 1mpg of each other, loaded or empty.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think im gonna just keep running the 454 til it blows. After discussing w/ some friends im gonna continue w/ the 4runner buildup (350, SAS, 10" or so lift). ill post pics when im done.
