: restore or cutt it up ????
JEEPSKEET 05-19-2005, 05:34 PM Well, after setting in the yard for a few years. Its time to do somthing with it...
my father got it new in 1980. I put a fresh 360 in about 5 years ago, trans went out a short time later.I think the new motor has about 10,000 miles or so on it...
So, PBB let hear what you think..... Restore it or Cut it up and tube it out....

It would make a nice DD and tow rig for the boat....
Mikel 05-19-2005, 05:36 PM That's a nice Cherokee. I would restore it. Besides, there is only one "my Dad bought it new in 1980" Cherokee in the world. My Dad is sadly gone and I wish I still had any of his older cars :(
fubar73cj5 05-19-2005, 05:42 PM How 'bout a combination of the two with a full cage and get that little guy in the picture out wheeling ;) . Leave it somewhat streetable 35's or 36's and make it a weekend warrior. Then pass it on to the next generation of wheelers.
usmcdoc14 05-19-2005, 05:45 PM "looks" relitivly rust free :p if it is i would restofy it. clean it up/minor lift and use it as a DD/tow rig.
the rusty ones get the hot saw
or make it a removable hard top with a full cage :D
4x401cj 05-19-2005, 05:46 PM Please don`t cut it up :(
ASTAR 05-19-2005, 05:48 PM How 'bout a combination of the two with a full cage and get that little guy in the picture out wheeling ;) . Leave it somewhat streetable 35's or 36's and make it a weekend warrior. Then pass it on to the next generation of wheelers.
Now THAT is a great idea for that rig!
JEEPSKEET 05-19-2005, 05:50 PM How 'bout a combination of the two with a full cage and get that little guy in the picture out wheeling ;) . Leave it somewhat streetable 35's or 36's and make it a weekend warrior. Then pass it on to the next generation of wheelers.
That kind of the line I was thinking.....
And for my son "Jesse" he's already hook on the jeep thing...
This is our trail junk. and he loves Tellico & URE He's my little trail buddy...

fubar73cj5 05-19-2005, 05:57 PM Right on, I have a nephew that will be getting his own seat and harness in the back of the CJ. I can't wait until his mom and dad give me the "green light". Just like the generation before me... :)
Now get hackin' :D
JeepAddict 05-19-2005, 08:18 PM You can make it pretty hardcore and trail worthy without cutting the body up. Tow rig is also a great idea with that 360. Plus you can always cut it up later if you decide.
TexasBlake 05-19-2005, 08:38 PM If you can make a cut up / tubed out FSJ look good, then do it. I have yet seen one that just looked right.
cj5Dave 05-19-2005, 09:41 PM If that thing is as clean as it looks I would leave it relatively stock (I know that's a dirty word around here but that rig is practically an heirloom not to mention being officially vintage at 25 years old).
My vote is to modify it with bolt ons only and keep it looking nice.
Stilgar 05-19-2005, 09:57 PM Let the rig answer the question. Take it out on the few good test runs. Maybe you'll like is so much that you will end up wanting to make it a full time trail ride. Or, maybe you'll hate the way it climbs, crawls and just plain gets around off road. If it were mine, I'd lift it a little and run it as a tow rig since I don't have one. :smokin: Nice ride.
gumbojeepyj 05-19-2005, 10:28 PM I think I can offer some input here...
My father bought an old 2wd 6 cyl chevy c10 back in late 1980 as an 81 model. he drove it for a long time. hell my mother drove ti while pregnant with me ( I was born a few months later in april 81). He was gonna sell it when I was 14. I told him not to that I would liek to have it. Well figuring he would only get about $500-800 in a trade in, he gave it to me. Hell its still titled and registered in his name. Through high school we built it up into a nice street rod with a 350/th350. Later I regeared it to 4.10 and we got it painted. I have comtemplated selling it as I have not had the time or money to work on it while in college. Everytime I question my self, the answer is "just hold on to it". He doesnt really care what I do with it, but i know that when he is gone I'll still have it and hell maybe it'll be my son's driver in highschool. Of course I dont have a son nor am I even married but thoughts like that fawkin' make me smile.

As was said above, there is only one 'my dad bought new in 1980' truck that you'll have. Keep it, never let it go and dont cut it up.
Fix it up into a nice DD/trail rig or even a nice tow rig. If you cut it up or sell it you will kick yourself later.
1x1_Speed_Craig 05-20-2005, 02:47 AM Looks nice. My vote is to restore it. Please don't hack up a nice FSJ.
Craig
Daltongp 05-20-2005, 05:46 AM I came into this thread fully intending to tell you to cut it up no matter what it was, but then I saw that nice looking FSJ and I have to tell you I would restore it and DD it. I love those old Jeeps and I am going to buy one when I find a relatively rust free one around Michigan....
bigcamojeep 05-20-2005, 06:31 AM I'd have to agree with these guys. There's only one "my Dad bought it in 1980" FSJ.
I'd like a Harley, but know I'll be inheriting my Dad's 1987 Gold Wing Aspencade. Last year before a model change. It's only got 33K miles and it's mint. But unlike my Dad, I'm going to drive it. :)
Poley 05-20-2005, 08:17 AM restore it, put on a SOA you can run 35's, not to bad for a DD or tow rig for that wrangler.
64Trvlr 05-20-2005, 09:18 AM Check out www.ifsja.org
XJ_ranger 05-20-2005, 10:28 AM you already have a trail rig...
save this one as a clean driver...
DO IT
comeon, everyone is doing it
you cant get pregnant the first time...
Ex CCS Racer 05-20-2005, 04:51 PM George, I say you give it to your fellow Black Sheeper and let him toy with it. That's just an idea though :)
gutamin 05-20-2005, 05:58 PM I say restorate it..wouldn't it look cool with a Kaiser front clip? I say keep it and build something that few others would have, you know set a trend or something like that. Cool FS.
JEEPSKEET 05-20-2005, 05:59 PM George, I say you give it to your fellow Black Sheeper and let him toy with it. That's just an idea though :)
Thats just what I need to do......You forget I wheel with you....
and I know how you drive.....
BHAAAAA-BHAAAAAA BLACK SHEEP.......

texastomcat 05-20-2005, 07:27 PM I'd say keep it - it looks nice, I like the color, not the usual wood paneling. This could be a nice family touring (mild trail?) rig, and the fact that it was your dad's makes it special.
Sandspyder44 05-20-2005, 07:32 PM How 'bout a combination of the two with a full cage and get that little guy in the picture out wheeling ;) . Leave it somewhat streetable 35's or 36's and make it a weekend warrior. Then pass it on to the next generation of wheelers.
Amen, pls do this. :p
Po' riggity 05-20-2005, 07:34 PM I get it running real nice, fix any rust issues, and then get a decent paint job on it.. and drive it. would make a sweet rig.. Id do it if I had one.
Scott
Nate95 05-20-2005, 09:42 PM I vote restore with a mild lift and maybe a locker in the back. Or it would make a killer tow rig for the YJ
dhoffroad 05-21-2005, 09:53 AM yea fix it up and drive it here is a pic of mine before I rolled it made a nice "family rig" ......damn I miss that thing.. :(
