Well if your willing to change the tailshaft to a scout 727 you could put a dana 20 or scout d 300 on the back or you could get the jeep 727 tailshaft and put on a jeep dana 300.Both of those cases are pretty short. To do all dodge I dont think youll find much shorter than the 203(the married 205 is not much shorter).Good luck.

the d300 sure sounds like the best choice, especially considering the aftermarket options like hd shafts and gearsets for it.

If you have the 904 the tranny pan will be square. If it is a 727 the pan will have a kick out under the dipstick

scout dana 300's will not work with a jeep tailhousing,if you put a scout tail housing on it will, but good luck trying to find one in a junk yard. jeep people are all over those, they only came in one year 1980.

jeep tailhousings from 80-86 in full size trucks, i got mine out of a 84 grand wagoneer... it has the round 6 bolt pattern (same as jeep dana 300)... the scouts have a "texas" pattern and will only work for scouts with a dana 20 and older jeeps with a dana 18...

jeeps that had a dana 300 were the 80-86 cj 5's and cj 7's the cj 5's have a shorter rear output tailshaft due to the shorter wheelbase...

to be able to run a jeep or scout tail housing you are going to need to switch out the main drive gear and shaft along with the rear most bearings...

anything else you need to know let me know, i just did a swap like that myself for a klune v to a np 205...

only trucks that came with a 904 that were 4wd where in the mid-late 80's and on....before about 88 or so...they were all 727 or manual.

i thought they switched to the 514 in the late 80's.

well yeah they had the 518's and overdrive transmissions..but before mid-late 80's they were 727 only..at least in 4wd...i think they were 727 in the 2wd too..but not sure.

The 518 came out as an option in 89, and was used through 93
