: Major body roll!
noclinkers 05-21-2005, 08:54 PM I have a 87 Runner. SAS with AllPro 5" front springs and 3" Chevy's on the rear, I have taken the bottom leaf out.I have 37x13.50 tires if this matters.
I am getting some pretty bad body roll with a load in it. What would be the best way to solve this?
Thanks, Bob
Izeloz 05-21-2005, 09:00 PM Put the leaf back in or get a swaybar.
4CrawlR 05-21-2005, 09:09 PM Sway bar or two is an option, Tacoma bar up front or Addco makes a bolt-on rear bar. I have one that I'll be reinstalling on my '85 with some disconnects. I ran it for a while and it seemed to work well. Off now until I get the rear end finished. For now I just run Rancho 9000s on all 4 corners with an in-cab adjuster and that works quite well. Firm up the shocks to match the load and road conditions.
GRMhick 05-21-2005, 10:21 PM Bilstein or BBCS shocks at all 4 corners, and getting your rear shocks as vertical as possible

You need to out board your rear shocks for starters

Booger Weldz 05-22-2005, 09:24 AM your rear shock mount positions suck old farts out of seat cushions

Put the stock supsension back on. :flipoff2: Mount your shocks as close to vertical as possible. And if your making new mounts anyway, Use stock staggard style. Just make them for some long ass shocks. This will help with the springwrap you WILL HAVE. Chevys+Blocks+no traction bar+useless shock mounts=springwrap. And get some bilstiens or pigs shocks.
porterwagner 05-22-2005, 02:57 PM or........ deal with it.
alisn4x4 05-22-2005, 03:20 PM heres a thought......... slow down through the corner? :shaking: being a tall rig, its naturally gonna have body roll, especially with flexy suspension. just keep in mind if you do a sway bar, it dont mean you can run a corner at 90 now. :D
noclinkers 05-22-2005, 10:01 PM Sooo.... my shock angles suck. Unless I put them on wrong this is how the Sky rear hoop is set up to work?
I also do not have the rear blocks. That was an old picture and those were only temps for about a week until I could get other springs.
I do not drive this on the road and that is not what scares me. It is the off camber stuff!
Click on the pics
Here is the load I had on this weekend

If you look close you can see it lean just sitting on the side of the road

Now that I have cut out my fender wells front and rear. I think I will try and put the stock Chevy's on the rear and toy rears on the front. The reason I didn't do this before, is because first the tires would not fit and second the 4x4 labs steering arms are flat enough that my tie rod would would hit the springs at flex.
Does anyone have a pic of a good shock mount position? BoogerWeldz?
JohnToyRatRig and alisn4x4 you can eat the corn kernels out of my shit! :flipoff2:
Thanks, Bob
Kyron 05-22-2005, 10:12 PM Where the shocks mount on the axle ............ they need to be closer to the leaf springs.
At more of an / \ ......... its all about leverage, your shocks have none for dealing with a side load (body lean)
Kyron 05-22-2005, 10:20 PM http://www.crawlinaz.com/forum/files/rvgea.jpg heres mine, see now the bottoms of the shocks are closer to the leaf springs
noclinkers 05-22-2005, 10:28 PM OK, I see what you mean, Thanks!
Kyron 05-22-2005, 10:32 PM Oh and I have body roll also :D

absofreakinlootly. Dude's and dudets, if you wanna get funky on da road....get a car. trucks are meant to go slow.
csudman 05-23-2005, 06:31 AM Actualy to make them work best. You want them vertical, or as close to vertical you can, and as far out on the axle as you can. Making them like the pic above will help some, but if you can get them vertical it will make a world of difference. You will probably have to go through your floor. But it will be worth it.
noclinkers 05-23-2005, 08:58 PM I odered some BBCS 15" shocks and new mounts today. I am to get the first batch of the new design. Can't wait.

You'll love it. It transformed my truck
I really want to get my rear shocks on too, but i know that will be a 3 day project since they have to come through the floor on my 4runner.
Westy 05-24-2005, 08:05 AM on the same note...
this will be my setup on my 86 P/U if i can justify sacrificing my bed for camping purposes...

will 15" BBCS shocks be too long though? I am running 5" rear Alcans.
Shaker 05-24-2005, 09:07 AM Get a sway bar from stock car products and make some quick disconnect liks for wheeling...
Chass 05-24-2005, 09:57 AM I'd say live with it. Body roll goes with the teritory. Mine is pretty bad but nothing like 4RnrRick's. I have looked in my rear view going around a corner only to see him looking like it would fall over. Yet both rigs do great on the trail.
You mentioned that you were worried about it on the trail in off camber stuff, I think we all are to some extent. Mine got worse when I did my exo and I just had to get used to it.

noclinkers 05-24-2005, 05:41 PM I think getting used to the Runner is a big part of the whole thing. This is my first Runner and it drives alot different than the rigs I have had in the past.
It is not scary at all without the load, it is just when I do the long trips and have to pack alot of junk.
I guess one of the ways to find out how far I can push it is to load it up and flex it up till it starts to flop. It would be nice to have an exo. :D
I am going to change the shocks and the mounts in the rear. If I have to put the shocks through the bed to get them verticle I will.
