In my haste to tear my 9" down, I lost track of the orriginal location of the retaining caps on the diff - I don't know which was orriginally left or right.

Is there a way to tell which one went where? Is it that critical that they go back to their orriginal location?

bolt the caps on and check to see if the threads line up on the bearing adjusters ????

We figured it out....

Luckily I'm a picture whore and found a bunch of pictures I took of the carrier as I was tearing it down a few months ago. Managed to find a distinguising mark on one of the caps and matched it up to the correct side.

Stamping them so you couldn't mix them up again is a good idea.
Dana's typically stamp a mark next to the cap, and the same mark on the cap.
They do the same on the opposite cap, with the same stamp rotated 90 degree's.

Since the cases are line bored with the caps in place, make sure you don't accidentally flip them over (though the adjustor threads probably keep you from doing that on a 9" as long as you know which side they go on).
