I posted a couple of months ago about my tow rig overheating. It is a 1986 full size Bronco with the 5.0FI. It is bone stock other than a set of 31s and an MSD 6al (had one laying around) and Blaster TFI coil. I had problems with it overheating and it did not seem to follow any pattern at all. Sometimes it would when it was hot out, sometime when it was cold, whenever. I replaced the water pump, tried flex fan, back to stock fan, thermostats, clutch for fan, radiator cap, even went so far as to have the whole exhaust redone with two new cats to rule out the clogged cat issue. Nothing worked. Now with the weather getting in the 90s and the registration due, it was time to get it right. Loooooong story short, the little sender that sits on top of the EGR that gives the EECIV computer the EGR position was about 200 ohms off. I had already ruled it out by changing the EGR and sender, but it turns out the one I got was bad. I got a code of 31 on the diagnostic for EGR position. Put a new one on and all is good. I know this isn't a hard core truck, but it is tech, and a lot of people chimed in on the old post saying they had similar issue. If you are fighting the heat on an 80's 302 with all the smog stuff on it, you might want to give the EGR a look. If you want my hardcore rig, it is in the Jeep Section :flipoff2:
