Will an NV4500 bolt straight to a Jeep Dana 300, or would I need an adapter?

Thanks.

If you get a dodge 3/4 ton, it will bolt on, the chevy will require some sort of adapter

the out put on the NV 4500 is 32 Spline and the Input on the
300 is 23 spline

so No you will need Adapter

My NV 4500 came out of a 1996 Dodge 1-ton Gas.

It bolted right up to my 1984 CJ-7 Dana 300 transfercase. No adaptor was needed.

Umm, okay.

Here's where I'm at, I have a Vortec 4.3 and a Dana 300. Initially I wanted to run a SM420, but after a t-case adapter ~ $500, I'm thinking it might be smarter to just spend a few more bucks and buy an NV4500 out of a junkyard. That's only if it will mate to my transfercase without any adapters, and only if I can use a standard GM bellhousing.

So a Dodge NV4500 will bolt up to my 300? Will a Chevy NV4500? What about bellhousings, can I use a chevy bellhousing with a Dodge NV4500?

According to AA, although the bolt pattern on the tailhousing of a 93-present Dodge Standard Duty (gas) 4wd NV4500 is the same standard NP pattern used by the D300, only 95 and older will bolt up.

96 and newer have a shallower internal profile in the tailhousing, so a shorter D300 retainer will be needed. But Hey Beerman's info contradicts this.

Also, 2001 and newer Dodge gas 4wd N4500's use a 29 spline main shaft, whereas, prior to that they were 23 spline.

The Dodge tranny can be used with a GM 90* engine with a full bellhousing, either one made by AA that uses an external slave, or a 96 and up stock GM BH, but this uses an internal hydraulic release bearing.

Either way, you will need to install a GM input shaft in the Dodge tranny to use a GM engine.

I used an early GM NV (wanted the 6.3 1st) with a Dodge ouput shaft and retainer. Bolts to the GM motor and D300. Can use the stock GM B/H or the AA. Good luck in your boneyard search....there really hard to find...at least around here. Theres a outfit in Phoenix AZ called Phoenix remanufactured transmissions that sell them rebuilt for around $1400.

I think your correct on the years. I was wrong.

But I had this discussion with the guy who rebuilt my trans. He claims that the tail section only holds a seal. You can machine out thie area to clear the 300 bearing retainer. And the seal on the 300 will keep the fluids in their place.

Also you can keep the Dodge input shaft and just get the pilot bushing from AA or turn out a stock one.

It is true that the 1995 and older Dodge NV4500's will bolt right up to a D300 because these have a deeper trannie rear retainer that will accept a standard D300 front retainer.
AA's solution for using a 1996+ NV4500 is to sell you a fancy (and expensive) front retainer and seal assembly.
BUT, if you get a clocking ring (Go2Guys, etc.) these provide enough spacing to allow a direct bolt up of the newer (shallow rear retainer) NV4500 to the D300 ... killing two birds with one stone so to speak...
In either case, the rear seal in the NV's retainer will envelope the snout of the stock D300 front retainer and will seal the trannie fluid out of the rear retainer area.

Here's how mine looks ...

Yes, the tailhousing does hold the seal. Good info on the clocking ring providing enough depth.

And as far as the input, I believe you need to change it due to length differences, not just the pilot snout diameter.
