I have an 83 cj with a 360 engine 35" tiers and a dana 30 front axle. This weekend I broke both stock locking hubs. One on fri. the other on sat. I also just installed a lockright locker in the 30. I was wondering if I get some warn hubs if I was still going to have problems with the axle shaffs. Some people say the 30 will hold up with 35s. I just don't want to put a bunch of money in to something that is junk. Maybe I can just change my driving and put on some good hubs and this will work fine? thanks

ditch the 30. that axle is not made to handle that size of tire let alone with a 360 behind it.

you WILL have problems w/ your 30...You can put better hubs in then you'll break u-joints. You can put better u-joints then you'll break axle shafts or the R&P. It's never ending with the 30 and putting the locker in just makes it worse! I'll recomend ditching the 30 before you really start wasting your $$$.

I had a 30 w/ detroit, 4.88, warn shafts, high steer, warn hubs, etc...I really wish I listened to everyone before I blew the $$$ on that POS. Spend the money on something that will last instead of wasting it on a 30!

I'm a firm believer that you can compensate with driving style & internal beefing. But, the bottom line with a 30 is that it's a POS just begging to be your weak link.

Hmm thats interesting  , I have seen two entirely different built jeeps (XJ-ZJ) with 33's do Potato Salad and Dump Bump with out breakage? The dude with the ZJ was actualy trying to break it on purpose as he had a D44 just waiting to go in its place, I am a firm believer that the SKINNY PEDAL is the reason those D30's suck a$$, I will admit that the first time I bust something on mine, it will be swapt out for a D44. And I like to wheel the Crazy $h!t :smokin: .

I destroyed a D30 with 31" radials & another with 33" TSL's. Trust me, they're not up to the task. Sure, if ALL the parts are new, they might last for awhile. Or, put one in the front of a 1,000HP mud machine that spends 90% of it's time with the front tires in the air, same thing. But, for 35's & a heavy foot (like the original poster mentioned), you'd have to plan on breakage.

I've watched my buddy blow up a CJ dana 30 R&P with a 232 I-6 and 31" BFG MT's...

A heavy foot will kill a dana 30 quick

Once you replace the hubs with stronger ones your just moving the weak point to the U-joints which are rather small... if you upgrade the shafts and joints then you move on to the R&P which again is rather small

A certain friend of mine blew a 30 on another friends jeep with it on 235LT tires. Skinny pedal IS THE DEVIL!

And yet there are many 30s that survive daily driving and serious wheeling on 35s all over the place. I've seen them wheeled with 38s behind a v-6 and twin t-cases with a 230 something crawl ratio survive fine. Depends on you.

I'd be willing to bet none of those are original CJ (passenger side pumpkin) 30's though, which is what we have here.

Don't get upset and question everything... :p It's all good, but that's exactly what it was. :flipoff2: Out of an old CJ. The only explanation I can offer is it was a light buggy so the torque was nullified. I will be building one soon with a t-150 (not out of my heep), dual D20s, and the same 30/44 combo out of my old Jeep and hopefully a diesel 4 banger if I can adapt it up. :D

man i busted almost every ring and pinion tooth of my 30 with a gm 151 iron puke :flipoff2: and on top of that it was open diff. i did not waste my time and money on the 30 and swapped in some 3/4 ton full width axles instead. dont waste your money because i calculated it all up before i shed the 30 and you will spend more money on it with beefed up shit than you can just use stock shafts and u-joints in a 10 bolt,44 or a 60. :smokin:
