I am looking for a 94 or 95 ext cab 4x4 5 speed Toy truck and cant decide: 22re vs the 6cyl. I know the 6 has more power, but seem to have head gasket issues or something?
I am currently driving a 93 corolla (it is my fiance's) with 4cyl auto to work every day (about 25 miles each way). The 4cyl in the corolla is surprisingly peppy and it gets such good gas mileage. I will keep the corolla for a while, but am just keeping my eye out for a good deal on a truck. I would ideally like to get a truck and put some 31s on and just drive it. So if anyone could give me any ideas on which engine is better, or what kind of gas mileage you are getting and your tire size/gear ratio, that would be great. I am not that concerned with gas mileage, but it is nice to see some numbers at times. I may even put some 33s on it at some point. I basically would like to see a comparison of the 4cyl versus 6cyl and also see if either one on 31/33s gets better gas mileage than my jeep (15ish). Thanks

The 3.0L V6's didn't have much more power than the 22RE 4 cyl and yes,
they did have headgasket problems. Stick with the 4 cyl for those years.

your corolla will make the 3.0 v-6 look like it is a ford motor, it is that much of a junk :flipoff2:

Ha, the corolla makes the 4.0L in my jeep look like a darn briggs and stratton. I have no idea what engine it is in the corolla, but if the 22re is somewhat comparable, it seems like it would be a good choice, especially with 4.88s and some 33s :)

My v-6 had the head gaskets redone by Toyota, 80,000 miles ago, and it just rolled over 190,000 miles. The v-6 has a ton more torque than the 4banger, especially if you open up the restrictive stock exhaust with headers and a muffler. I also have a K&N intake and Jacobs ignition, and people constantly ask if I have a v-8. I climb I-80 west over the Sierras, and only downshift to 4th gear for the hillclimb from Truckee to the Donner summit. With 33's and 4.88's it only get 16-17 mpg, though  . I will say that lower gearing for serious offroad is easier with the 4banger's transfercase. I have compared it side by side with a stock jeep 4.0 in a YJ(TJ?), and the 4.0 smoked me! Yes, I alm planning on a 3.4 v-6 swap, but don't believe it's a worthless engine, as some would have you believe.

I bought my truck new in '89. Toyota paid for my V6 HG in '99 w/152k on the odometer on a 10 yr old truck. When it was stock I got 18 mpg around town, and 20 - 22 mph on the highway. Once on a trip to the Grand Canyon I got 24 mpg. Other than the HG, it is a pretty reliable motor. I'll turn over 200k this coming weekend.
For 3 years I ran 31" BFG A/T's with the stock gearing. The truck cruised really well on the highway with this setup. And the tires wore really well, I put 60k on them and sold them when I upgraded to 33"s. There was still another 20k of tread left.
Today with 35" MTR's and 4.88 gears I get 15 - 16 mph on the highway which is still better than my '97 TJ on 33"s. The motor is not all that powerful but it still outpulls the 4 bangers on the grades.
For future upgrades, with the V6 you get the stronger V6 diff and the larger disk brakes. The drawback is you will have to replace the chain drive TCase if you want to put a crawler in.
If I had to do it all over again, 22RE vs. 3.0 V6, I think I'd still be happier with the 3.0 V6.

wow, one for the 3.0, you are a rare breed.
it is possible for the 3.0 to go into the high miles but i wouldn't trust it any more than i trust a daewoo motor :flipoff2:
