my old mans hub assembly blew apart on his 04 rubicon on the road and the tire went flying so i was just wondering what hub assemblys we could pickup from a junk yard to replace it with? will it have to come from a tj? or will it work with yj's or xj's? or is this really out of the question and will it have to be bought new?

if the hum went flying, so the part that is bolted stayed on the the rest went flying??? DAMN.... so how fast was he going and is the entire jeep trashed at this point? I cant imagine the axle not getting destroyed by that happening

there wasnt an axle shaft in it since he broke it last weekend, he was just taking it for a run up the street and it flew off, and yes there was still a part bolted on but the rotor and all that was gone along with the wheel ( 36" irok) and it flew threw a guys fence.

the axle apears to be fine and my dad managed to steer it down the road for about 100ft before finally comin to a stop on the shoulder, another foot or 2 and he probably would have flopped it in the ditch. lucky i guess.

I really do not see how you could have a hub come off and NOT damage the axle housing when it digs into the street. The knuckle woud instantly drop down and hit the road surface.
TJs just use unit bearing hubs like Jeep has been running since 87 (maybe earlier on some XJs  ) The hub is only held onto the knuckle by three bolts. Even the great Rubicon with an awesome D44 front axle still uses the flimsy D30 outer knuckle assemblies and unit bearing hubs. :shaking: Nothing that is up to runnig 36" tires, thats for damned sure.
You could have your local Chrystler dealer parts dept check the part number between the Rubicon hubs and the regular TJ hubs. If they are the same part, just get a new hub from Napa, or a used one from J&W.

You cannot run that hub assembly without a shaft. There MUST be at least a stub shaft bolted in there since that is what holds the hub assembly together.

Ditto to what BamaJeeper said, the stub shaft is what holds the unit bearing together. If you break an outer stub, REPLACE IT instantly! Replace the nut too........

That's what I thought too. With the shaft out, the only thing holding it together is grease isn't it?

yea its a petty shitty design. by the way a new unit bearing assembly is going to cost like 200 dollars. stupid non rebuildable bearings

shitty design? it's called a full floater

You can get Dana 30 wheel hubs from the junk yard - same thing on the rubi are D30 outers...and yes you must have the stub shaft in there for future reference...
