: Cheap tow rig ? thinking of buying
Monkeyboy 02-27-2002, 12:42 PM I found a 1990 f-250 custom 4x4 7.3Liter diesel for $3750.00.
it's a standard cab. lumber rack and three heavy duty locking tool boxes in the bed. Body and interior are imaculate.
It has 235,000 miles on it with all maintenance records. It was fleet maintained by the local dealership. Recent tranny, radiator, and brake, service was completed.
I know that some of these diesels can run for over 300,000 miles.
Would you buy this thing for $3000.00. to use for tow vehicle purposes only and an occasional drive to work.
I've been looking at newer trucks for much much more, Around $15,000. I would like to be able to save some money and not get locked into a multi ytear payment plan.
How much does a new motor or a rebuild cost for one of these?
gunracer1 02-27-2002, 01:05 PM i would say pass, that truck has a butt load of miles for a ford. and they are expensive to rebuild. it is a non direct ingnition engine and doesn't have a turbo, so it will suck at high altitude. you can find a regular cab cumming for under 5 k and it will go way over 300k if you change the oil.
Mieser 02-27-2002, 01:08 PM That sounds like a good tow rig too me....for a decent price.
I would be a little worried about the 7.3 though. I know when we roast powerstrokes at work it is about a $11000 bill. I am sure the regular 7.3 is a lot less....but I don't think you can get a $800 longblock like a small block chevy.
I think a 70s chevy 3/4 ton makes a great tow rig. Motors are dime a dozen, SM465, NP205, 14-bolt rear. You can even get A/C and power window and locks all for around $2000-$3000
later :jeep:
Lord Baskerville 02-27-2002, 02:48 PM Sounds like a good price to me.
Add a turbo if you are going to tow in the hills/mtns.
A "turn key" 7.3 is about $6K here at Cat-Co if you need an engine.
Cummins boy is a LITTLE biased IMHO...
Power-Strokes NEED the coolant additive if they are going to last...
If this is from a Ford dealer they should know this and the truck should be fine.

Monkeyboy 02-27-2002, 02:56 PM The truck was part of a local construction comanies fleet. I'm thinking it was a bosses truck since it looks new still :D
I was told that all the fleet trucks were on a service plan with the local dealership. Since I live in a sorta rural area with lots of farms I imagine this dealership would actually have cert. Diesel mechanics.
I'm going to take a closer look and test drive the truck today after work.
I would still much rather have a powerstroke crew cab.
doesn't hurt to keep the options open.
Hayraker 02-27-2002, 03:07 PM I bought a brand new one in 93, crewcab, it was a gutless bastard even with 4.11's and a stick, clutch was super slippery pulling off with a load, dropped a valve at 17,000 miles, Ford balked on the warranty and just did a patch job,
When it had about 30,000 miles on it I totalled it on a bridge & rolled end over end 2 times and almost killed myself in the process, ........................................But if I had it all to do over again, I would still go thru that horrible experience just to get rid of that piece of SHIT.
Been Cummins ever since. Put 365,000 on a 93 model and have 30,000 on an 01
Monkeyboy 02-27-2002, 03:27 PM at least you were in that piece of shit truck rather then a litlle honda.

even I have my standards:flipoff2:
Nothing wrong with Ford trucks in my opinion, just not a fan of the old 7.3 or the powerstroke, ..........now I had an 86 with the 6.9 that was one of the best I ever owned.
I would even go as far to say that as far as the vehicle itself, Fords are better built than Dodges, but Dodge has the cummins so that is what I drive. If Ford had a cummins, I would drive one.
Monkeyboy 02-27-2002, 03:36 PM I have to agree with oyu on the 6.9 motor.
my buddy has an old 86 F-250 that just keeps going and going and never complains. she smokes at altitude but that is to be expected.
I was just thinking that the 7.3 might be at least a little better.

if you just take a look at a auto trader, you will see diesel engine rebuilders, with ford logos and chevy emblems, but no dodges in the ads. i just can't figure out why, maybe its because i have never seen a wore out cummings. i have driven them with 600k on them and it was true the dodge was falling completly apart the motor ran great. yes i am pushing the cummings, it can't be beat in reliability. i have three fiends that have over 350k on them and they all run great, and have never had any thing major done to them. by the way my daily driver is a f 150 ford
Lord Baskerville 02-27-2002, 05:27 PM Didn't mean to spank ya Gunrunner:flipoff2:
I agree that the Cummins is a great engine...
Too bad it's stuck in a Dodge ;)
But, I don't think there is anything wrong with a PSD.
Chevs.... 6.2 & 6.5 Talk about a POS :D
Love my Crew PSD 97
Why are there more Fords for sale than others...
They ARE the best selling truck for the ******* year in a row.
Only makes sense that more out there = more for sale.
