Soooo I am looking to "individualize" my new ride to help start a new chapter in its existance.

I don't want to waste the time respraying bashed body panels especially since the will be getting replaced this coming winter.

I am going to be adding some bomb canned graphics in a couple of hours and am just curious if I should Acetone the oxidization off of the areas I am going to spray...you know do a quick wipe?

Just don't want to get too much orange peeling or bubbly going on...

Or should I just spray away and say fuck it...it is a trail rig?

Pics will follow of course.... :)

I always clean it down well (pressure wash), then scrub it down well with wax and grease remover ($11 a gallon from your local auto paint store). Even on junk that I know will get replaced.

hum....
paint a trail rig - I going to do that. still thinking about what i want on there. I do have a little experience in body work and I have been told to make my rig purty. I have taken a sledge hammer to it and work on it when I can.

I do debate making it real purty and then showing the beast. I have the background to allow me to make it nice. but I generally refuse to spend that kind of time on anything.

I would clean and rattle can the heck out of it. Unlike Some folks - I prefer Krylon....

Rattle canning a trail rig??

Can't be done.

Nope.

Will look like sh*t.

what you thinking for graphics? Personally, although I know you want to make it "your own", I like the color it is. Its unique and different on its own. No others around like it and its instantly recognizable.

But hey, its yours.

Clean a prep first. You'll be much happier with the end product. Wash, de-grease. Mask off what you want to do then light sand the "base coat" to get better adhesion and smooth out the base paint.

Use some rattle can primer (same brand) first, makes the finish coat go on much better. Use a "decent" paint. High solids. $.99 cans of paint are just that, and look like sh*t. For cheap, decent paint the $3.00 stuff Lowes is pretty decent. I use it at work and it layes down pretty well and isn't really thin.

not that I would know.

Flames are always cool. Scallops are so SNORT.

I figured KING RUSTO would chime in. I might even paint over the tree sap that is still there...

As for painting the whole rig...NOPE...too lazy.

I will be adding some flames on the front to compliment the salmon color... :shaking:

Hey...what does a noisy Dana20 on the coast side mean? in 2H?

Do make sure you mask more than you think you need to.. I had the shop doors open and got a little breeze which blew overspray around..

I was actually surprised at how "little" work was required to completely paint my rig and have it look alright when done.

Using a cheap HVLP or conventional gun, I think it can even be done a little cheaper than spray-bombs if you were going to do the whole thing.

I spent ~$100 on a gallon of black and a gallon of clear - didn't use all of either, but it was cheaper than 2 or 3 quarts of each.

4 coats of black, 3 of clear on the whole rig.

Spent $8-$10 on two spray-cans of IH Red implement paint just to spray on the stripes on the rear quarters, because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to clean the spray-gun again so I still have a quart ($8?) of IH Red in the can on the shelf. I also didn't want to roll it back outside to avoid overspray all over the ship, thinking the spray cans would be more "controllable".. but as noted, still got some red misting over the rest of the quarter, and I have a red tire. :D

In the past, I've been known to run a dirty glove across the rig to knock the worst of the dust n' dirt off, then fogged on some paint from the spray-bomb.

Did that at NWBRU one year as the judges were making their way to my rig, in an attempt to give it that "wet paint" look. :flipoff2:

Surprisingly, the paint stuck pretty well.

Still, you'd be well off to scuff, wipe, and tack-rag it if you care at all about whether it'll last.

I never prep when I hit mine with the rattle can.

But then I rarely even make sure that it's the same shade of white.

And it looks like poop up close.

But of course I'm also gay enough that I've got a non-rusted tub that I want to strip and put a decent uniform coat of shiny paint on it to drag through the AZ underbrush.

HOS,

If your flaming - let me get my flame suit on - I would be happy to help you. I have been doing classic flames for over 30 years now. I can give you almost any thing you want except those new flames. I sure like those - I WILL learn to do them someday too.

Like I said if you want help - my flames do rock! :cool2:

am I tooting my own horn - YES. I do flames really well.

Could be why I want to call my personal business "House of Flames"

x2.

I used three or four $0.99 rattle cans, no prepwork other than a wash, and did it outside. The end result was actually pretty nice. Then I wheeled it and fawked up the body, go figure...

I do want to see some homegrown flames your rig...

First time ever doing flames and I love the way the top turned out...The sides are kind of :rainbow: but will be covered with a couple of stickers anyway.

I like the way the white jazzed up the front... :smokin:

Hey BEN W....I have your little bunny and he is my hostage...do you want him back for your next rig? An eightball took his place on the hood... :grinpimp:

Memorial day is going to be great...weather looks to be perfect...

Hey, that looks pretty hot! The white definitely gave it a face lift, and the flames look a lot cooler than I'd expected. Congrats...

If you want a real clean paintjob just take it down to Maaco next time.. Wait until they have a special. That is what I will do next time, save on mess, I sprayed mine in the garage last time :shaking: Just do a little prep work yourself and pull everything off you don't want painted or have to worry about masking.. Those dents don't look bad at all. Use a stud gun to help pull them, cuts on a lot time and hassle doing body work... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43996&item=4551771973&rd=1

And dude, the flames are :smokin:

Yeah...I knew someone would pick that up... the other (drivers side) ramp had channel web steel laying under it...So I thought I would try the no passenger/blind brail tire pic side...

FORGOT IT IS FULL WIDTH IN THE FRONT....

The flames look sexier this morning...everything is dry and non tacky. The Krylon brand dries damn fast.

Today I should take delivery of my Caddy Grill emblem

I told you Krylon is my fav.
Looks sweet. lets talk when its time to get that new face lift you and I know will never happen. you would actually think of putting nice fenders on a trail rig :flipoff2: I mean I would - but then again we all know my truck will never see the driveway let alone a trail. :shaking:

I like your choice of colors. it does look good. :smokin:

Hope you don't mind a CruiserHead piping in. I shot my Cruiser with rattle cans of Rustoleum Metallic Blue and sprayed clear coat over that. Looks great in pics for the web or until you get up close. I will definitely shoot with a gun next time, it was painfully tedious with the bomb cans.

To prep; I pressure washed, hit the whole thing with two coats of Foamy Engine Brite, quick scrub on the nasty parts with a brush, then pressure washed again. Maybe an hour total prep time. Paint stuck great.

(Note I also painted my Chevy truck camoflage with exterior latex house paint and a brush..)

Some of my best friends own Scouts. I try to judge people by who they are on the inside, not what sheetmetal they wrap around themselves. :flipoff2:
