: Low budget modifications
Diesel_Cruiser 02-27-2002, 03:13 PM I am currently doing a frame of resto on my 1980 Bj40, since i am on a very tight budget, i like to keep my modifications as low cost as possible.
So if you know of any low budget modifications i can do let me know!
My truck is a 1980 Bj40 3000cc diesel, it has 32" All terrain tires, 3 inch extended shackles. It's my daily driver and will rarely see offroad ( I live in Belgium not exactly offroad heaven!!) so steering and braking has to be optimal.

Beautiful thing. Easy to do and cheap around here.
Not sure how available GM parts are around Belgium...
What do you really want to do with it? 32" tires and a shackle lift are fine for driving on the highway.
Oh yeah,
I got your spring pins and should send the shims out soon..
p.s. It really is not a good idea to tell everyone here on this board that you will not be driving your cruiser off road. I think that is sacrilege ;)
Mr McGee 02-27-2002, 04:32 PM My best advice--
Make Stuff YourSelf!!!
It saves tons of money and you know what went into it and feel more ownership over your rig. But, i would not make the brake lines, steering pump, engine, etc:flipoff2:
j/k:D
If you're the least bit mechanically inclined, you can make bumpers, roll cages, body tubs, fenders, yadda yadda yadda.....
my 0.02

If you really want, the rear disk bracket drawings are on woodys site (they're good drawings w/all measurements) And where i am i can get used calipers for about 10 bucks.
Just say the word.
rustycruiser 02-27-2002, 05:04 PM Do you have power steering on your BJ40? You could do a mini truck PS swap for pretty cheap. With your 32" tires, it would be perfect and is pretty much bolt on. Or find a PS setup from a 40 or 42 that has PS and swap it over.

Diesel_Cruiser 02-28-2002, 12:44 AM I know it's sacrilege to tell this board I'm not goin to take my truck offroad very much, but i am 200km away from any serious offroading trails. And i do not have a tow vehicule, so if i damage my truck i am stranded 200 km away from my home! If i could I'd take it offroad every day.
About fabricating stuff myself, the brakes plan interests me, i have drumbrakes all around, is it possible to change from 4 drums to 4 discs and use the same master cilinder, brake booster,...
I am a welder so fabbing stuff isn't any problem.

BJ On Roids 02-28-2002, 03:25 PM i think disc brakes, then probably power steering
shackle reversal, would be cheap for you, especially in th current apart state, and you wouldnt have to put longer shackles, as youd get some lift from the caster correction, NICE and itd be perfect!!
cheap too
rabid 03-01-2002, 05:33 AM Check out IH8MUD.com, shows how to do the mini truck disk swap. Get ready, though...nothing is cheap on a cruiser.
nuclearlemon 03-01-2002, 06:46 PM best cheap (free) mod i did was pulling my instrument cluster apart and yanking the little metal hoods that "direct" the light out...now i can actually see my gauges at night.
Mr McGee 03-01-2002, 07:46 PM tell me about it....
Was up north and almost ran outta gas cause i couldnt see the guages....but, gone are the days of empty tanks!!! That was a good mod.
Diesel_Cruiser 03-02-2002, 03:43 AM That was my first ever mod I did to my truck, couldn't see the gauges any other way, still run out of gas plenty of times, the fuel gauge malfunctions.
