Ok, so I'm looking for a new DD something either a 4 runner or, preferably, a extended cab pickup...1990-1995 ish, I want something that I can transfer most of my parts into as I plan to slowly build it.
I've been searching for 22re/w56 combos with a forward shifter. But all I see are v6's...do the w56 come in them or is it the g58? is ther an adapter to adapt a 4cyl dual tcase setup to the 6 cyl?
The 4 cyl rigs you find that have locking hubs will have a w56 and a gear drive t-case. If you find one with drive flanges it'll have a g58 with a chain drive transfer case that is unusable for dual applications. The only 5 speed offered in a yota fromt he factory is the r150f. It can be adapted to a 4 cyl transfer case with an adapter rather easily. All the info you could ever possibly want to know about your transmission and t-case can be found here. www.marlincrawler.com If you have any questions you can call the shop at 1-559-25-crawl or click the BBS link at the top of the main page to ask questions of anyone that works at Marlins.

If you get a v6 toy your only options for adapting dual toyota cases to your rig is to either:
A.) Buy the v6 to 4cyl. adapter from Marlin or AA, buy a dual case adapter either from Marlin or AA, and dig up two transfercases. You should also consider going 23 spline in both cases. The front one will need to be 23 spline for the v6 to 4cyl. adapter. The rear doesn't have to be, but with a v6 marlin recommends it.
B.) buy a v6 to 4cyl. adapter, and Marlins new adapter coming out that mates the v6 chain drive T-case to the back side of the 4cyl. reduction box.
The first option is going to be a stronger set-up, but will cost more. It will also let you put 4.7 gears in the back case. The second option will force you to put the gear set in the front box, and you'll have to mate the chaindriven unit behind that. The prices are listed on Marlins site.

great info guys, glad I did ask again as my previous answer was basically...no v6 will not work with 4 cyl dual tcases

If you want options, www.inchwormgear.com sells a V6 adapter as well. Marlin and Inchworm are both good though.

Would a Taco rear end fit the standard 8" 3rd? I've read that the axle width range from 58.5 like the third gens to 60" is it only the 4th gen (2005) toyotas that run the 8.4" 3rd?
The next vehicle I buy will have to accept all the goodies, so I'm not thinking I can go with a taco simply because of drivetrain issues adapting the 8" third and dual tcases I already own

I could be wrong but the only tacomas with an 8" are ones with the TRD electric locker. Which you would want to keep if it had it.

Non-TRD Taco (no e-locker) uses the T100/Tundra style 3rd, so no it will not accept the older style 8" 3rd you already have.
4runners up to present still use V6 8" style 3rds, AFAIK though.
If you want a Taco, buy it and sell the stock axle and throw an older axle under it. The price will come out even probably and the width difference isn't really significant. Don't not buy a Taco just because of the rear axle.
In other words, the Taco is newer and comes with a great engine (2.7 or 3.4). Its easy to swap the axle out. Its a lot more work to buy an older truck and do an engine swap.

Wow this is a big help...I drove through town checking dealerships, no go on anything really interesting.
However I did get a reply from a Dealership in Williams lake (like 2 hours away) They have a 1998 4runner, 4 cyl, 5 speed for 14 k Cdn.

So a V6 carrier will fit this? so then a 4 cyl will too? (guessing by what I'm reading in the Toy FAQ)
