View Full Version : electric fuel pumps - specific model?
I'd like to swap out to an electic fuel pump.... I caught (particularly Old Scout's) advice from searching about the rotary vane type. Any problems with using the Carter 4070 in anyone's opinion? Any other good quality ones to be had for <$60. Did alot of searching, but didn't come across too many specific models of pumps.
Also, fixxing to run a fuel return line back to the tank, inserted right before the carb. See any problem with tapping into the filler neck? Seems easier than dropping / drilling the gas tank to add a fitting there.

$60 is kind of a low budget for a good fuel pump. However you can get a NAPA special for $45 and run it till it dies. That Carter doesnt look like a bad pump but the 4.5a draw seems a bit high for a fuel pump.
OR increase your budget a bit and get something like this with a filter:

As far as running a line back to the tank. If your in a ScoutII you should have a vapor canister and all that how about using that? I'm thinking with all the extra fuel going back into the tank that wouldnt be an issue. What do you guys think?
If your in an 80/800 those sadle tanks werent built for preasure so the filler should work fine. IF you have a rear tank on same then I'd just tap the tank. Drop it, clean it, and seal it while its out.
It's a '78 Scout II, so there's no vapor canister.... at least on mine.

If you do tap the fill neck, I would get a steel one if you don't already have it, and tap the fill tube not the vent tube. Using the vent tube causes problems during fill ups.
Try justinternationals.org fuel injection board. I hope you are planning on a regulator, too.

Is this for a carb or FI?

I assume it's not a self cycling pump? If it is you don't need a return line. If it isn't with this set up I think you will need 2 pressure regulators. One after the pump to knock down the pressure going into the carb and one in the return line to keep some of the pressure going into the carb. You could probably get away without the first one if the pump pressure happens to match the carb requirements but I would still run 2 any way.

My 78 Scout II has all that I spoke of. But I didnt mean vapor canister(charcoal one). I actualy ment the one in the acess pannel behind the filler tube. You should be able to tap into that.
Not familiar with the "self cycling" term, so I don't understand how that relates to a return line.
From what I've seen searching around, using a fuel filter that has the 2 outlet ports, the return path is smaller than the path to the carb, so the carb gets as much fuel as it needs because it's lower resistance path for the fuel than the return.... so no regulation need on the return.
Can't swear by this info.... guess I'll find out.
So any other specific models of pumps people have had good experience with?
