I'm not sure, I have never seen a bumper quite like that before, doesn't look to bad. On another note, you might want to replace those body mounts some time. :D

Really different, and I like that. No idea how well it will hold up though. What size tube did you use? Doesn't look like it's going to protect the lower area either, but who cares right! :D Congrats, looks like a nice job...

The truck belongs to a friend of mine and he let me and my brothers experiment. The body is going to be replaced in a year or two. The bumper is made from 1.75 HREW and it has been tested one weekend and held up to the abuse. And the bottom crossmember area wsa addressed and fixed with a piece of 1/4 angle welded to the bottom and back of the crossmember.

LOOKS WAY CLEAN NICE GRINDING SHOULD WORK ON THE TOY TO THE LEFT OF THAT BLAZER:D

The Toyotas is gonna blow the blazers away. The only grinding was on the ends where the tubes wrap arround the body and when we had to remove paint. No welds were ground smooth.

Nice work, but why would you build a sweet bumper like that and have no provision for a winch (at least in the pics I can't see it if it is there).

Sweet looking though.

BadDog,

If this were your truck, what lower areas would you have wanted to protect?

Paveman,

It is hard to tell from the pics, but it is a winch bumper. The owner doesn't have a winch yet so we have not mounted the receiver.

We designed this bumper with many criteria in mind(no particular order):

1. Provide an improvement in approach angle.

2. Provide the minimum amount of overhang.

3. Provide radiator and radiator core support protection.

4. Provide protected light mounting points

5. Provide winch attachment and protection.

6. Provide easy winch access in deep mud and river crossings(increase winch mounting height).

7. Provide a bumper that will survive any driving style.

8. Provide the minimum chance for hang up.

10. Provide a bumper that will not hinder access to mechanical componets.

11. Do all of the above and make it look good.:)

Thanks, and keep the comments coming.

I was just thinking that with the high cross bar, it would be easy to take damage on either side of the ramp/skid. For instance, when angling onto a shelf (or big rock, etc.), if your approaching at an angle to get one tire up, that lower core support/tag/fender area is completely exposed. It also makes a nice trap against the core support and rear bumper support bar (going under) to keep the tires from ever seeing the obstacle if it is near vertical (but low enough to get the upper cross bar over). Just me but, I would probably add something further out and swinging under to help keep that from happening.

Anyway, I really like it and it looks to me like a better design than most. Thanks for the pics, it will help when I incorporate some of your ideas into my bumpers. :D I won't have the issue I just mentioned since I'll be hacking out the entire area that I just described as exposed. Basically a cut straight up beside the core support mounts and across under the lights. If your bumper were mounted on my K30, the only thing you would see would be the front of the tires under the cross bar, and the rear bumper support wouldn't hang down like that.

Thanks for all of the comments so far guys.:)

BadDog,

Agreed completely. The pic angle combined with the slope the vehicle is on makes it look like the support bar hangs down much lower than it really does, it will be very difficult to make contact with the lower support bar. The core support will contact before the support bar in that situation just as you explained.

We'd really like to fab a nice skid plate for both sides, but there is alot of area to protect and a plate capable of withstanding the abuse the driver is known to give out would be extremely heavy. Another idea is to run two tubular braces(per side) from the rear upper bar down to the support bar with a thinner skid plate. The single plate would have much more clearance, the bars and plate would be much lighter, etc. etc.. decisions.

In any case, included in our original plan was to design something that will allow this part of the bumper to be used as a slide to push up onto obstacles that the body would not have been able to clear or would get hung on. We've been evaluating different numbers of bends and different bend angles, but we still have alot of consideration left before we make a final decision and begin building something.

Thanks for the input so far BadDag, and if you have any other comments please share them,

As for our next project we have the toyota sitting next to the blazer in the picture. We also are working on a 79 scout, 87 buick grandnational, and A typhoon. As for other peoples vehicles we are building a cage for a SCCA cavalier. Should and will be posting all pics of our work that is upcoming.

We appreciate all feedback as it will help us to improve.

Thanks Scott-885 and PCS-74
