: I am a total Toy newbie and don't have time to search--looking at an '88 V6.

I have a buddy that has an '88 V6 Toy p/u and he is looking to sell cheap. What is good and bad about this truck? Apparently the only thing wrong with this one is that it needs a rear u-joint and a new valve cover gasket. I would look to do a SAS and Marlin cases to put my 38s on it and wheel the piss out of it.

Thanks for any help/opinions.

Its good that itc cheap bu its bad because its gonna cost more to build. You'll need another adapter to run a 4 cyl case behind the r150f trans (assuming it has a 5 speed) If it has an auto your on your own. If you really want straight tech come over to Marlins BB. ;) Not that there is anything at all wrong with this board but Marlins is a very close knit bunch that wwould like nothing better than to help out.

V6 will hydrolock if you flop it. V6 can blow head gaskets easy. Otherwise its a fine mess to start with ;)

I will say that working on the 3.0 V6 can be a pain in the ass. I like the performance of that engine over the 22-re, but there is a lot of emissions junk all over that engine that makes getting to things rather tough.

You want a 5 speed if you're getting it and almost as cheep of an option would be to find a R151 tranny to bolt up behind it and then get your dual cases or single 4.7 case.

Good luck dood! I've tortured my 88 V6 pickup for a few years now and I like it.

No it won't. It has oiling issues on the driver's side, if you maintain the oil level, you'll probably be fine unless it sits on the passenger side too long.
The 1988 V6 was not part of the head gasket issue, and they "don't blow head gaskets", they had a flawed factory gasket. Once it was fixed, they were fine. But it doesn't matter, since the 88s didn't have that problem.

Any other misconceptions you wanna throw out? :shaking:

The engine is fine, you'll have trouble with the t-case mods, but that's it.

left on its side long enough, oil will go into any open valve and get into the cylinder. Unless you have check valves in the heads return holes. :D

Well, I bought it. I figured for $800 I could play with it. The cab is clean, but the bed sides are shot, but that will be coming off anyway.

I have been reading on Marlins site and still have a BUNCH to learn, but is there any way that an Atlas would bolt to a Toy tranny? I see that I have a 23 spline input in the transfer case, but I am sure something is different.

BTW, the shop will be closed Monday for the Holiday, but we will be open again on Tuesday.

Thanks for the help. :cool2:

My friends with the 3.0 hydrolocked after he rolled it. It sat on it's top for about 10-15 minutes.
