Rhino is starting with a good condition low mileage 4.6 in his engine build. I am not so lucky.

I have a good condition 3.9L which is in need of a refreshing, and a good condition 4.6L crankshaft. From researching and doing some math, what I plan to do is the following:

*Bore 3.9L block +.020 to 3.721"
*4.6 crank ground to 2.3" main journals (3.9 size), and offset ground to 2" rod journal and 3.375" stroke (from 3.22")
*this will yield a total displacement of 4.8L or 293ci. essentially the same as if i were staring with a buick 300 crank, but without the need for a custom flywheel, or real main seal adapter, or front cover.
*255 Ford V8 pistons
*Rover 3.9L 5.66" connecting rods
*Buick 300 heads
*Piper 285 cam

this combination of parts should yield a compression ratio of between 9.5 and 10:1 and a *very* happy mid-range powerband with enough grunt to pull stuff.

my question is, with the buick 300 heads what are my intake manifold options? i have not found any definitive info in regards to this. i would like to run EFI, whether rover based or GM TBI based.

does anybody have any experience with any similar setups to this? i am planning on calling D&D to get their input.

The 3.9 has the 3.7" bore, I think. You can also get cranks that will give the you displacement you want without the grinding. I think aluminumv8.com has them... just looked, they have a reworked 300 crank to fit the 215. Then get some chevy 2" rods and Ford 2.3L Turbo pistons, and rock out with a 5.0 :D

I believe the 300 heads are identical except they have 4 bolts vs the 5 of the rover heads, and they breathe a lot better too.

I have a whole book dedicated to the building and tuning of the Rover V8:

I'll give you an old Kifaru front bull bar for the 4.6 engine. Hows that for an offer?

its about weight dude. i like the size and 320lbs of the rover v8, plus there is no reason why they cant make really good power for their displacement. you think i dont know that a 350 would be easier and maybe cheaper? but it wont get me what i want- a compact, lightweight, v8 that i am already familiar with and have the parts and knowledge to build.

I'll sweeten the deal even more. I have in my possesion right now:

Used Defender sidesteps &
Used Rockware Rear Cones (Weld-in type, not the cheap bolt-in ones) &
Very Used 3.9L, barely broken in with an easy 179K miles on it (Available after receipt of new engine).
