: front dana 70 ?s
saprobe 02-28-2002, 04:31 AM anyone know what years of front d70 had what size axleshafts, and spline counts? what year did they come open kuckle, and disc brakes?
ive located a couple of d70 fronts, both have closed knuckles and drum brakes. i could deal with swappin on discs,if the rest of the axle is worth messing with.
i have a feeling that the shafts will be corse spline, and use a funky type of joint, and not really be any stronger than a newer front 60.
any comments? :emb:

Joe V 02-28-2002, 01:14 PM Scotty,
If these are off an IH, I'm intersted in purchasing one if you decide to pass one up.
The Jerk 02-28-2002, 01:18 PM they are :rainbow: just get a 60
livermore2 02-28-2002, 02:38 PM yeah their weak and :rainbow: sell them to me for cheap. are they 6 or eight lug? thats how you can tell what kind of axles are inside.

saprobe 02-28-2002, 08:51 PM man you guys are too cool for me.thats why i post here so often. flame away,if it make you feel big and important
hig traveler, youre prolly close enuff to bring whatever you drive over here and ill show ya how well it flexes.something wrong with fitting your tires with small lift and a sawzall? maybe you guys like to roll over, but i actually use my rig and like a low CG
mossberg they are both 8 lug
joe,one is from a late 60s international, the other is supposed to be from a chevy, year unknown.
brector, sorry,my puter is old and slow. i did do a search, but didnt feel like looking thru 5 pages of what was mostly useless info.i didnt meant to put you out any...my humblest apologies...
BTW,i love all these pop-ups you guys got over here...
livermore2 02-28-2002, 09:02 PM ok you scored big time! they are going to be 35 spline with tracta joints. these are super strong but they will viberate on the street at high speeds. great for the trail or rock crawling.
saprobe 02-28-2002, 09:32 PM mossberg, thanx for the info. vibes at speed are not a prollem.it doesn see any street duty. what about swapping on discs?
livermore2 02-28-2002, 11:11 PM what do you want to do? build a open knuckle 70? if its for trail use just run the drums. i wouldnt tear down an open knuckle 60 to use its outers. just remember dont pay alot for the 70s bucause i dont know of anyone making new drums for them. plus you will find that you have to make alot of the parts too.

Just keep me in mind if you want to sell the IH one, I need it to convert my 2wd 1ton pickup to the factory 4wd setup
( it's a nostalgic thing :smokin: ).
Thanks...
evilfij 03-01-2002, 12:42 AM sell me the axles and hubs out of one of those bad boys.
I have this weird facination tracta joints
Ron
saprobe 03-01-2002, 05:21 AM im simply lookin for a more durable front axle. its a trail only rig,so id want to run whatever i can get cheap.whenever i see a 60,they go for $600-$1000. i could prolly get this front 70 for $400 or less.
im startin to think this tracta joint thing might be kinda cool, but not sure if i can live with front drum brakes. i converted my rear to discs cause i really hate drums, and installing a drum brake frntend and leaving the drums on it is one of those things that will bug the crap out of me. maybe ill go ahead and pick it up and see if i can make a bracket for the caliper and try and use a regular 8 lug rotor on the front.
thanx again for the info

thats the same reason i went with the 70s. i got two fronts and one rear for $250. out here 60s go for $1200 to $1500 EACH! and thats if you can find one! plus the 70s have a stronger ring and pinion with no sacrafice in ground clearance. i would try and buy both axles and get a package deal. that way you have a set of joints and axles for trail spares. :)
mytzlflick 03-01-2002, 07:03 PM I have a front closed knuckle 70 with 6 lug hubs and have found disk brake conversion kits out there for that so yours should be easier as it has 8 lugs already, anyone have a spare set of 8 lug hubs?
