Does anybody have experience with the Isuzu diesle that came in the Chevy Luv?? A friend found one in a junkyard. I would love to have a diesel in my Sammy. Is it worth going to look at??

no fawking way, waste of time. Only one worth looking at for the sammy is the VW diesel swap. I have been considering it, but I would only do it if I could find a decently priced 1.9 turbo motor, which will never happen for a while. SO go find a vw with a motor!

I had a TD Trooper - that motor has got to weigh Twice what a VW diesel weighs...

There's a Suzi running around Melbourne, Australia that runs a 2.6 Isuzu Diesel and five speed though dual cases, SPOA toyota diffs and 35" boggers and it rocks. Amazing performance and from what i hear reliability too.

here's a link to a tiny bit about it, checkout the competitors link

I think I know the one you mean Grimbo, but I was pretty sure it was a petrol not a diesel.

...compared to a VW. I hear those Isuzu's have a whopping 50 hp, and they're huge! Dunno 'bout their torque tho...

I had an 82 LUV (last year) witha diesel. It was a slug!!! For the hell of it I took it to the track for "test and tune" night.....something like 22 second quarter mile at 54 mph....and that was beating the absolute crap out of it!!!!

It got great gas mileage though...40 + mpg

Also, they have a reputation for killing transmissions (don't know if it is a crappy trans or what). I never killed the tranny, but I did blow up 3 rear diffs in 120,000 miles .....a really slow luv with a diesel can pull the front wheels if you try hard enough!!!!:)

I have to respectfully disagree with this statement..... the turbo "L" toyota diesel in my LJ is a real truck engine ( as is the Izuzu ) and with the right turbo and perhaps a little pump tweaking I am certain that the izuzu diesel will work great in a 'zuki..... with more torque than you will ever need , especially if you gear low enough:D

well...

i got a Mazda 2.0L TD in my cj6 ... and its a really light engine... alu block and heads... i'd say its way lighter than the original engine...

you can find a similar isuzu 2.2 TD ... (low milage japan exports)

id shells out 76hp (not kiddn ;o)), but nearly 150lb of torque... oh. yeah... torque max at 1800rpm

so from this point of view, very possible to put into a sami... (and a very good upgrade, too (20% more hp, 150% more torque)) - those are +very+ mild engines, so i guess you dont wind up breaking drivetrain parts all the time

the only drawback is that they are rather big in dimension, so i guess you'd have to be creative with steering and such...

her's a pic of what to expect... you neend to work around the turbo, the a/c compressor, alt,... etc...

Isn't the SD33 the diesel engine used in the Scout?

that would be too fawken' huge for a Sam. It's a good engine from what I hear but not a good choice for a stupid little ugly truck (slut).

Yup, the same. The engine is an I-6, and probably longer than half the length of a Samurai. Besides, if you were gonna use this engine for anything, you want the SD33T (turbo) version, which wakes it up a bit better. It returns about 24 mpg in a heavy (read: 5200#) Scout II, and lugs around off-road ok with adequate gearing. It really would be a great engine in a Samurai, if it weren't so damn long and tall.

I don't doubt it would be a good engine. Hell, if I could find a good one for cheap I might consider saving my Scout instead of parting it for the axles to go under a Sam.

There's a license plate that wouldn't make it past the dreaded 'DMV Sensors'... Check out the plate on Entrant 15...

in my experience, an diesel more than 10 years old is a dog. gm 6.2 is a good example. but, i have driven dozens of little vw diesels and i love em. they would be awesome in a sami, and you can actually get about 150 hp and 210 lbs of torque out of them, or at least they release those versions in europe. and thats the exact same block, just different injection and a slightly different turbo. they get a little red letter in the tdi to represent which version they are.
