ok, My local place that I bought reasonable grade 8 stuff went out of business. The local hardware carries stuff, but a 9/16 5" bolt runs like $4!
Does anybody know a good online place to buy graded nuts & bolts?

Fastenal (http://www.fastenal.com/)
Check these folks out. I deal with them quite frequently at their physical store. Good quality and good prices.

OK since no one had any rave reviews I searched on the net for awhile. Fastenal seems to require boxes of like 100.
But I found The Bolt Depot (http://www.boltdepot.com/servlet/IndexServlet?main=/home.html&show=1) that alows orders of single pieces as well as good prices on box lots with no min order. They also carry metric items. I got like 3 boxes of 1/2 and 9/16 stuff and shipping/ handling was like $10. That seemed a little steep, but then again I probably got 5# or more. It was still a lot cheaper than $4 for a 5" 9/16 at the local hardware.
If anybody has other links go ahead and post them so I can bookmark for next time.

since all of the locals there now have the same problem as you, why dont you buy in bulk and sell them to the locals. You could make lots of money.
I wish someone around here would do that...

I am a fastenal employee of over 3 years and we do offer a great product but if you only need small quantities look somewhere else unless there is a store close.

www.msc-direct.com has all kinds of fun goodies... I know in their catalog it shows boxes of like 50, but it seems like you can buy them individually on the web site... take a look... and watch out, they have ALL KINDS of bolts...

OK, I decided to be a bolt bitch and check these sites out. I went in and searched for a 9/16-12 5" Grade 8 bolt. Following is my comments on the sites listed :flipoff2:
www.msc-direct.com
Clunky, very hard to use interface and search. Dificult to use with no click to order, but you could place online orders. Min. size pkg was 25 and the cost was $1.84 each. Could not determine Shipping/handling charge.
www.mcmastercarr.com
Pretty clear interface and search worked well. Takes online orders, no minumum order size. Cost was $1.81 each for up to 24. Could not determine S&H.
Fastenal (http://www.fastenal.com/)
Not as good an interface as McMasterCarr and search did not find grade 8 bolt. Box of 25 was 1.85 each and that appeared to be min order. Could not determine S&H
http://mettec.com/
Seems to only stock Titanium alooys and Al? $$$ At least thats all I could see?
The Bolt Depot (http://www.boltdepot.com/servlet/IndexServlet?main=/home.html&show=1)
Very easy to use interface and quickest of the bunch to get to the specific item. No min order size but S&H was easy to determine. S&H on very small quantities was high...for 1 bolt it was $8. I ended up ordering 4 boxes of different stuff and total S&H was 10.93. The test bolt was $1.78 for singles or $1.42 each for a box of 10. This was also the smallest box lot of all the sites.
In summary I found Bolt Depot easiest site to use and also the cheapest... based on my highly scientific sample :flipoff2:
Oh, and thanks for the suggestions :smokin:

Not for Grade 8 stuff, but if you're looking for a great source for Stainless Steel fasteners and hardware, check out MMS & Accessories (http://www.mmsacc-stainless.com/). Their online ordering isn't that great, but they do give good phone.
