Passenger side front diffy :D:D
How about an aluminum engine block, siamese bored to 4.155 & throw in a 4" crank for 434" displacement :smokin: Sorry, the gearhead in me is showin' again :D

High5 02-28-2002, 05:42 PM man i love that buggy!!! i sport wood every time i see it:D

hey TEX tell me more... what motor is this stroker based off of? 350 chebby? :D
fcfred 02-28-2002, 06:21 PM fabric body panels if you're gonna run dual tranny's you need a way to reduce other weight so how about in the body, plus then you could easily change the color if you get tired of it or run full tube on those sunny days when you want the wind up your skirt:D
Also have Jason narrow a fullsize late 70's chevy to use as your tow rig, either that or just use a cool old station wagon. If you're gonna tow the thing then at least have a cool tow rig. Or build fabric/plastic flares that easily snap on and off for street legality.
Brian E 02-28-2002, 06:22 PM I don't think there is much left to do to it. They only thing it might need is to heat the Beard seats. Maybe even leather. There used to be some pics of the buggy being built on the twistedcustoms.com page, but he has changed it around. There are some good pics of what Jason did to Don Robbins' Cruzier. Look under the shop and paint links.
Mieser 02-28-2002, 06:49 PM Thanks for all the input. I have heard of some new stuff that is going to come out in a few months....round bottom 60 housings, aluminum hummer wheels, 'moly 60 axles, etc....
Improving on the basic concept of the that buggy is hard to do!
I have all the old pics off of the TwistedCustoms site too :) NO really I am not obbsessed.
How about a 76 ford shortbox 1-toned with 4" of lift and 42s on hummer wheels. Is that cool enough for a tow rig? If someone would come up with a decent inside the frame header for an FE block I would be able to get moving on that dang tow project!
I am thinking about a self-centering orbital for the front. I am undecided about the rear though?
I like the idea of the big inch small block chevy. Though I think I am going to see how it goes with 350 ponies from a RamJet.

I got a better engine for you. How about a Cadillac Northstar. They are all aluminum that weigh in at around 450lbs. They redline line at 6500rpm's or so and they make 300hp for the factory. You can find them used for around $1000-2000.
Mieser 02-28-2002, 07:37 PM I did look at the northstar motor :) I couldn't find a rear sump pan and you could only run a 700r-4 with it unless you want adapters.
I like the heated seats idea...

GRMhick 02-28-2002, 09:31 PM I say put in a small block chrysler, either a 340, or a 408 (360 with a Mopar 4.00" crank). Now that woudl have tons of low end power... that and portal axles... only to dream...
I've seen Pauly's jeep up close and was impressed.
It's no nonsense and made for business.
I dig the way it sets so low.
To top it all off, Jason's a cool guy! ( that bastard! :D )
willymutt 03-01-2002, 05:30 AM Why not go old school with it. Put is built AMC 401 in it. Costs a little more money, but the coolness factor is great. I know of 3 blocks that are great canidates for a rebuild that are located right by his shop. There is even a guy in Rapid City that is an AMC guru that could help you set up the perfect combo.

Actually, the 434 is based on a 400. Bore .030 over & increase stroke from 3.75" to 4". :smokin: However, if you start with a stock 400 block, you need to do some machine work to clear the crank. A bowtie block needs less work, a rocket block is ready to go.

big4294x4 03-01-2002, 08:24 AM You could easily build a custom oil pan for that Cadillac Northstar Engine. If your building a custom tube frame buggy, you might as well go ahead and make a custom, baffled, deep sump oil pan to go with it. The northstar motor would be really hard ass.

Northstar engines are all currently used in front-wheel-drive cars only (gonna be a rear-driver out next year with this engine I hear). I think that would be a PITA to adapt to a traditional layout.
TEX
LS1- lighter than a northstar, better torque curve, and if $$ is not an issue http://www.lingenfelter.com/ should be able to get you all the hp you would ever need.
Lowrangerider 03-01-2002, 10:43 AM MmMmMmMm..... Lingenfelter Jeep. Now that would be pimp!

You can use a 700r4 out of a 2.8 v-6 chevy if you want an automatic.
Mieser 03-01-2002, 11:22 AM Thanks for all the suggestions!!!! Keep 'em coming!!!
Motors.....
I have thought about running everything out there...from 4cyl to big blocks :) I still think the boring ol' SBC is hard to beat. I like the ramjet better than the LS1. I really haven't seen any clean installs of the LS1, the Ramjet is WAY simple that way. I also think that having 350hp in something that is 3600lbs ready to run is going to be a good place to start. Down the line I can also install a big inch small block....aluminum if I want o ditch some weight. With the iron motor the car sits at an almost perfect 60/40 split. I think the Northstar motor is a little too wide, also the northstar is all aluminum and much shorter than the LS1 for those who care. If 350hp isn't enough I'll have Lingenfelter work through it alright! :D
Axles....
I am a BIG fan of portals. Though I really don't know if I can keep it as low to the ground as I want with the portals. As it sits, with 39.5s it is only 6 feet tall. Also portals are uncharted waters....and parts are sketchy.
Thanks for the help guys....keep it coming. I am also trying to think of what color to paint the dang thing....choices choices!

FYI the LS1 is all aluminum also and around 30lbs lighter than the Northstar. Talk to http://www.buckshotracing.com/intro_buggy/buggy_intro.htm about them the owner has the LS1 pushing 425 with minimal mods. He also has alot of experience with the northstar which is probably the cleanest install i've ever seen. He punishes that car all day long http://www.buckshotracing.com/intro_buggy/Movies-1/MOV00025.MPG
dirtrod 03-01-2002, 03:27 PM FWIW,
I have several friends that worked for GM in their reman plant...They say the northstar is a pos.
No first hand knowledge here, but these guys spent 8 hrs. a day (well maybe 2hrs.) ;) working on them, they should know.
I hear the new caddies have a french built engine/driveline that they just drop in the GM chassis...oh boy
Mieser 03-01-2002, 04:31 PM I think I am going to stick with the RamJet 350. I have seen SBCs take a TON of abuse! PLus you can get parts anywhere for them.
I have thought of a few things I want though....
-some kind or gascan storage for longer trips
-5 on 5.5 lug patter and brakes for 15" wheels
-XD9000i with plasma line and safety hook
-mesh top that I can bungie camping gear on
-some kind of storage for tools
-seat heaters :D
-zip tie on windshield with manual wipers
-some kind of bikini top
-waterproof covers for the seats

road1will 03-01-2002, 04:37 PM hey TEX thinkin about that motor you think that the same think could be done with a SB ford??? i aks because my truck chassis is all set up for a SBF and it would be hella easier...
maybe based off of a 351W?
Mieser 03-01-2002, 05:24 PM Yup, you can make a killer SBF motor out of a 351W. I think the max displacement is about 420something. I considered doing this in my tow rig, though I decided to keep the FE block. The key to the ford stroker is a modified 400 crank or a custom crank....I think 4.25" stroke if I remember right. There is a good writeup in car craft on a 408 ford motor too.

Mieser 03-04-2002, 10:25 AM Anyone get pics from ProRocks of this buggy. It was sporting a new RamJet!
