I got a set of Scout II D44's from a junkyard this weekend, and I'm in the process of tearing everything down and cleaning it up. Kind've a n00bie question, but what holds the caliper on? I can't seem to figure it out.
Also, help identifying the year would be greatly appreciated, as I'm not sure of the year. Any features that stick out on the different years, or are the axles just about all the same, regardless of year?

The caliper is held in with 3 parts.
First is a special Allen Head screw on the rear (toward the rear of the truck), then there is a slider/spring dealy that slides in perpendicular to the truck (from either the inside out, or outside in). Use a hammer and screw driver to tap this slider out. Then you might need to tap the caliper out (push the bottom out, then rotate it out).
Buy loaded calipers and you will get all the clips and set-screw in the hardware kit... or atleast you should.
Note, cause I just did brakes on a SII last night, the inner pads needed to be slightly ground in order to fit properly. 5 sec with the grinder but still...
As for the D44's, essentially they are identical. However there was a change in the bearing on the rears mid run, as well as grease lube vs gear oil lube. But the parts are interchangeable. The rear brake drums also got wider (2" wide as opposed to 1.75" wide IIRC). The 1980 SII front axle also has 2º of caster built into them, as opposed to the 0º in all the rest.
Other than that, year really doesn't matter too much, atleast that I have seen.

Thanks man, worked! :D
Next question is on removal of the axle shaft... do I just wiggle it through the hole in the knuckle and it'll pop out or are there any clips i have to remove inside the pig?

There are no c-clips on Scout axles. Once you have the spindle off the knuckle, you can just pull the shaft out through the hole in the knuckle like you said. You could have figured that out by pulling on it, and it would have taken less time than posting a silly question about it... :flipoff2:

I could've, but I didn't want to get all dirty before work. Thanks, though :D
