: Micro-Machine?
StinkBug 02-28-2002, 01:01 PM I been gettin some funky ideas from the thread with all the power wheels in it. I'm thinkin it would be cool to build a rock buggy that was absolutely as small as possible. Keep it light and narrow and simple with strong parts and it should go anywhere.
heres what i'm thinking. build a small one seater tube frame. use a harley or other torquey motorcycle motor hooked to a divorced (sammy?) t-case and run to either sammy or toyota axles, possibly even narrowed. Have it sit on 31s, or 32s but it would be so small they would look like 40s in comparison. I'm thinkin it could be a ton of fun and for fairly cheap. try and get the weight under 800lbs. with a rig that small and light you could just kamakazi over anything, and hell with that weight you could put on an ATV winch and get away with it. who cares if it doesn't have tons of clearance, just skid plate it well and floor it. plus it will be so light that you can use smaller axles and parts and not break constantly. I think it would be SWEET to build this thing and flat tow it behind my rig. what do you guys think?

Pavemen 02-28-2002, 01:12 PM Flat-tow it? At 800lb, jsut throw it in the bed :flipoff2:
RustoleumWhite 02-28-2002, 01:15 PM so..... your discribing a quad.... just with more flex......
You *could* start with a Honda Oddisy (sp)...
jdjanda 02-28-2002, 01:21 PM Look for the post on the mini monster trucks, small compact, with 35's. Not much room for gear.

You could use the axles off of those little kubota tractors they have portals too...Heck just start with a baby Kubota and hack stuff off...
I've got a little JD750 at home that's about the same dimensions as a small Kubota (has portals on the front too). But, it's way too heavy for this kind of project. Probably weighs 2,000lbs w/o a mower deck.
As far as a motorcycle engine, pick one that came with shaft drive I would think. 1100CC V4 from an old Honda Magna comes to mind.....

ColdNorth 02-28-2002, 02:51 PM Suzuki 300 King Quad 4x4. '4 speed + reverse' tranny, no clutch. Three speed transfercase. Locking Diffs. IFS tho.... So fit the diffs with some axletubes, build shafts, use outers from a 4x4 tractor or something on the front (and rear? )... You could probably mill the splines in the axleshafts instead of rolling them, which means it wouldn't take much to build.
Build a tube frame, triangulated upper and lower CA's (front and rear, since you could set the xcase in the middle), and run these:

...Super Swamper Vampire ASX's. 26x9.50x12 or 26x13x12. KICKASS.
That's what I'd do, anyways. :D
StinkBug 02-28-2002, 02:57 PM the ATV thing sounds cool, but i'm thinkin a little bigger. something thats bigger than a quad, but smaller than a sammy. I'm actually thinkin it would be cool to try and run comps in it. its small size would be at a disadvantage on huge boulders, but would also allow it to squeeze in where others couldn't. also wouldn't have to worry about knockin over gates. the honda magna motor sounds perfect, i forgot all about shaft drive, that would work awesome. i'm thinkin i'd do a tunnel between my legs for the shaft, and put the seat right over the T-case. either that or try to mount the tcase up front under the hood and sit at the far rear. have the motor up front and me in back and it would probably balance the weight out nicely.

road1will 02-28-2002, 03:10 PM ive been thinkin of the same thing recently. real small tube frame buggy powered by a 22RE with a small auto and a toyota case (maybe dual toyotas?) front and reay wagoneer 44s ridin on some 38s
one seater, narrow (really narrow) body and a WB in the range of 85"
total weight under 1400 lbs
gunracer1 02-28-2002, 03:13 PM man you have been reading my mind. i have a seca 750 in the shed that i was thinking about doing the same thing with, i would use zuk axles with 5.12s and a 4.16 t case from a zuk make it less than 1k and a good spotter could hold you down on anything. i think he could hold it down on the big climbs. i could hook the shaft right to the t case make it about 85 in. wheel base with some 33s, it ought to kick ass. might need to gear it lower but you could use a chain and sprocket. just run the stock drive shart to a drive sprocket and use a lage sprocket below it on the t case. cheap and easy, hell i might build it for my kids. since i have about three sets of zook axles laying around. now that i think about it, the shaft is off set to one side so the chain reduction would be real simple and still not to tall.mike
samazuki 02-28-2002, 03:24 PM USE A GOLF CART CHASSIS WITH SAMURAI T-CASE AND AXLES AND SOME KIND OF MOTOR.22R OR SOMETHING. IT'D BE REAL EASY. ACTUALLY A SAMURAI MOTOR TOO WOULD BE BETTER. WE JUST BOUGHT SOME GOLF CARTS TO MAKE RACE CARS OUT OF. 1/8 MILE DIRT OVAL AT A BUDDIES HOUSE. ONLY 2 RULES
1. ALL SAFETY GEAR ( CAGE , HARNESS,FUEL CELL, HELMET)
2. NO BRAKES
ANYTHING ELSE IS FAIR GAME. AXLE SWAPS, BIG BLOCKS ETC.
