how about.... VERY!!!! if your shackles are straight up and down you won't get much deflection out of them, making your ride very stiff. If they angle towards the spring you get good articulation, if they angle away from the spring you don't...

did I miss anything???

ok, because I'm looking at waggy springs (4" SUA BDS front springs or stock waggy fronts SOA) which will give more angle. 2 of my friends have procomp 4" springs on their YJ and shackles end up verticle.

you want a 45 degree angle for wheeling (a little soft for a dd though).

Here's one of many posts I found searching on this subject

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24832&highlight=shackle+angle

but to sum it up, if you are using flat springs, any movement (up or down) is going to decrease the distance between the spring eye's (arching), therefore you want to make sure you shackle can accomodate this. if it's angled back toward the spring, I don't see how it would (at least not very well) I think verticle, or slightly angled forward is what you want, however, if your spring is arched, for it to flatten out (wheel go up) the spring eye's have to be able to move apart so you need your shackle to accomdate that. Just take a look at your springs, measure the length (arched or flat) along the arch (not directly eye to eye) and then measure from your solid mount straight out to your shackle where ever that distance ends, is where your spring will max out (length wise) make sure your shackle can accomodate that.

There maybe other factors (espcially for on-road use) that come into play, but the above should ensure that your shackle isnn't limiting travel...

yea, bummer having to put new mounts on it - went to wider wranger springs but you can still see the stock hole in the frame :)
