So, what's the best way to cut the knuckles on a Scout II axle? Try to grind off the welds on the center portion that hold the tubes on the differential, or grind the welds that hold the knuckles on the tubes?

Pics would be great :)

Do a search for "SOA"
The cut and turn is part of the proceedure.

Very well documented on every IH web site out there!!!

Definately grind the welds at the knuckles. The welds at the center section are plug welds are much more of a bitch to remove than the fillet welds at the knuckles.

I was going to go at the knuckles... a friend told me it would be easier and more accurate to do the plug welds, which is why I asked. :)

I did search, but on variations of 'knuckle turning', not SOA :(

Take a portaban and cut the knuckles about 1/8" inward all the way around about the depth of the portaban blade and beat the things off.

 Cut the knuckles off with a #6 tip on a cutting torch and then weld them back on. Thats how EVERYBODY does it.

Rat-tail file and a LOT of time!!! Rotate the inner knuckles with a BIG pipe wrench. Run a thick gooey bead of JB weld for a STRONG bond. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

cut the welds down to the tube with either a cut off wheel or a portaband then pound them off with a BFH clean up the welds with a grinder set your angle and pound them back on. the first one will take forever the second will take 20mins
