: Oil Pressure gauge and a relay

So when I bought my 89 YJ I bought it for simply a project jeep. Most everything on it works, but I'm trying to get the small stuff on it fixed.

When I bought the jeep the oil pressure gauge didn't work. the needle on it moves but it stays in a fixed position. When I turn the key to the on position but not starting the actual engine, the needle moves all the way up for a full really high pressure reading. So I don't know what the deal is because I've never really learned much about wiring and what not.

Secondly I have this relay right behind the dash under the steering column. I think it works but want to replace it cuz there is no cap covering all of the electrical components it. My issue is I don't know what kind of amperage it is or whats its for.

So help here would be nice

This is a relatively easy fix. First off does the needle stay in the same place when you turn the engine off or does it go down? The best thing to check is the sending unit or switch whatever they call it. It is located right above your oil filter. It is about an inch in diameter and a couple of inches long one end threads into the engine the other has a water tight electrical plug with two wires. 1 unplug the water tight plug. with the ignition in the on position the needle should not register any pressure. 2 using a piece of electrical wire roughly two feet long. strip both ends 3 you are now going to ground out the harness you unpluged in step one by simply sticking one end of the wire into one of the two holes and the other end of the wire will need to be grounded to the battery or engine block or whatever is close and a good ground. once you have grounded the system the needle should jump from zero to max pressure or even more. note only one of the holes in the plug will do this so be sure you test both holes. If it does jump then all you need to do is replace the sending unit (the piece threaded into the engine). If it doesn't work then your problem is in the wiring or the gauge itself. Hope this helps if you have any more questions you know where to ask.
