: SR SOA w/FJ60 Steering Q
Panzer 02-28-2002, 06:48 PM My rig is currently 3 inch SUA and I was planning on installing FJ60 PS next week when it dawns on me...I am going SR SOA with OEM springs in the fall.
IF I leave the springs in their original orientation I don't forsee any major issues. I am basically installing the box directly above and slightly forward of the front axle.
If I reverse the springs and move the axle forward am I going to have to move the PS box forward or will it work?
Anybody running FJ60PS on a SOA?
Any idea if I could run the draglink across the backside of the axle?
BJ On Roids 02-28-2002, 11:36 PM have a close look at the pics of my rig, im SR and SOA and 60 series steering, and my pics are in a thread called
BEWARE poser pics
ok, i moved the diff forward 5 inches, no problems, with linkages, changed bump stops and shock locations, though, which is normal for doff moving
if you flipped the arms to the rear, you are also best to flip the arm on the box....from facing forward to facing rearward....
think it out in your mind, its a bit of a brain swell, b ut even a simple fella like me can understand it. when you steer your diff it goes the current way and its all good
now if you put the arms to the rear, it'll interfere with your pinion, unless you go high steer, but if its rear itll steer the opposite way to what it currently does you turn right car goes left:eek: little bit scary, especially if you're not used to it ;) now, face the arm on the box to the rear, and youve got yourself setup perfectly again
hope i explained myself well enough, i have considered and will soon be doing this setup
or just use a box from a *J75 series, its arm is already a revers arm, flip it forward and put it a long way behind the diff
feel free to ask for clarification on some points, or maybe you already knew all that stuff?
Panzer 03-01-2002, 02:05 PM I hadn't thought of the reverse steering effects of the aft draglink. Thanks.
Most of the issues I have been thinking through as I collect the parts I need. I was going to mount the 60 box about where the DS shock upper mount is now and relocate the shock mount aft using ford uppers. This would put the box just a little forward of the axle. This way I can wheel in comfort this summer and then do the SOA/SR this fall.
Now I think I will put it a lot forward so that it will be in the right place when I do the SOA/SR. I figure that between flipping the springs and doing the Wardens style SR it will end up moving the axle foward about 4 1/2 - 5 inches.
Check my math on this but I think flipping ends on the front springs will move the axle forward 3 inches and then extending the front frame rails out 1 1/2 - 2 inches for the SR will move it another 1 1/2 -2 inches for a total of 4 1/2 -5 inches forward of it's curretn location.
Sounds like about the same thing you did. About where is your box now located on the frame.
TIA
Chris
Panzer 03-03-2002, 02:48 PM Damn, I guess if the only people running FJ60 steering on a SOA rig is a guy in OZ and me, after this fall, I'm gonna have to do a write up.
Thanks anyway
FJ40_1969 03-03-2002, 03:21 PM Why run the FJ60 power steering? :nuke:
I have the saginaw conversion and it is bullet proof, available, proven and compact!

BJ On Roids 03-03-2002, 03:51 PM 60 steering is neater, no cutting major holes in your front crossmember, and the worst thing about saginaw steering is its not available here :nuke: parts arent as readily available as the 60 series ones are
THE way to locate your box, and this will be fine from a factory setup right through to 5 or 6 inches forward, is to take your shock tower off, then take the bolt out of the top...flip it around, and put it in the other way, then put all the shock absorber back on.....bit of guard trimming, like 5mm and it all clears, now mount your box in the hole in your guard where the shock was, butted HARD up against the shock tower, you will have to notch the tower out a bit, but it fits PERFECT and is plenty strong enough
i also run 60 series diffs

I hadn't thought of that.
All of the ones I've seen done so far remove the shock tower to locate the PS box in it's place and move the shock upper mount aft using ford truck uppers.
I am not 100% sure what your saying but I'm not sitting here looking at the cruiser either.
I'll take a look when I get home this evening.
I started to say I'll PM you if I can't figure it out BUT I'll leave it onlist in case someone else is also trying to sort this out.
BJ On Roids 03-03-2002, 09:56 PM i emailed HEAPS of pics of the setup out, quite a while back, as i was assembling the vehicle
very easy, looks factory
anyone wanna host them?
cheers
P.S. i can email them again if someone wants
pic is worth a thousand words
wngrog 03-04-2002, 04:47 AM BJ42, you have too many good pictures, I am going to subscribe your ass.....
Panzer 03-04-2002, 11:02 PM I'm on the bus now. Just move the shock from the aft side of the tower to the front side. Trim some off the inner fender panel and some off the upper tower and presto. That is an awesome idea.
I'll let ya know how it turns out.
Take advantage of that star and post a good shot of yours for me to look at.
Thanks brother,
CAS

dog walker 03-05-2002, 12:05 AM Over in these parts FJ60 boxes are hard to come by and very expensive, so Saginaw is the way to go for strength and $$ wise.
Besides, the FJ60 box puts alot more stress on the frame than the Saginaw does. So does the Scout box............:girly:

BJ On Roids 03-05-2002, 03:21 PM big thanks to wngrog
