I will be in charge of tech inspection for a local series of upcoming mud races in my area, and could use some expertise on the issue of factory carbs on specific years of dodge light duty trucks. Last year there was some debate on the usage of an Edelbrock carb as they are the same as a carter. So what was availabe on LIGHT DUTY DODGE TRUCKS and for what years. Thanx for any info!!

1986-1988 Dodge Ramcharger and W series came stock with the Rochester Quadrajet (360 and 318 4bbl).
The Edelbrock is basically a Thermoquad IIRC.

The Edelbrock is basically a Thermoquad IIRC.
Huh? The edelbrock isn't even in the same boat as a thermoquad. Eddy's are square bore like Holleys, thermoquads are spreadbore. The thermoquad is closer to the Quadrajunk in that they are configured they same, small primaries with substantially larger secondaries.
Dodge ran the thermoquad in 4bbl applications from 1974-early 1986, mid year (March '86) chrysler changed over to quadrajunks for a short two year stint, then in 1989 the Bosch Throttle body replaces the Carb.
In two barrel form, the 318 was dressed up with a carter BBD and the 360 went with a lager Holley 2 barrel. These carbs will interchange without swapping the intake manifold, respectively.
Back to your initial statement, that the guy that wanted to run an Eddy because it was similar to a carter AFB, technically they never even put the carter AFB on a 70's or 80's truck. Now in 1965 you could get a 426 street wedge in a limited production truck and it had a Carter AFB on it.

SOME pre-72 trucks used a carter AFB, which is what the edelbrock is baised off of.
All newer trucks used a holley 2110 (very similar as a 2145) q jet, thermo quad, and 80's trucks used a funky 2 bbl that looks like a 1 bbl.
I have NEVER seen a factory carter afb on a truck.
All 318's had 2bbls.
360's had a 4bbl option, but most were 2bbls also.
If the motor is stock, there is very little performance gain by going to the edelbrock. The stock 70's dodge motors were aprox 7:1 compression and complete dogs (my 77 2wd dodge with a 360 was slower than my 96 with a 318, and my 96 is well over 1000 lbs heaver (probabally closer to 1500)

Ok, this info is out of my B/W Carb Application manual. I've never known it to be wrong, but you never know. This is the easiest way I can think of t o get the applications, short of going to the dealer and looking up each engine/transmission combination for each model truck in the parts manuals. I'll try to lost these as best I can so they make sense:
YEAR ENG CARB/TYPE/MODEL #
1988-85 360 - Rochester 4bbl M4ME
1987-85 318 - Holley 2bbl 6280
1987-78 318 - Holley 2bbl 2280
1984-83 360 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1984-82 318 - Carter 2bbl BBD
1983-81 318 - Holley 2bbl 2280
1983-79 360 - Holley 2bbl 2245 (automatic trans)
1983-78 318 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1983-78 360 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1983-78 440 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1980-79 446 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad (don't ask)
1979-74 318 - Carter 2bbl BBD
1979-74 360 - Carter 2bbl BBD
1979-72 360 - Holley 2bbl 2210, 2245
1979-72 400 - Holley 2bbl 2210, 2245
1977-73 360 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1977-73 440 - Carter 4bbl Thermoquad
1975-74 413 - Holley 4bbl 4150G
1974-70 318 - Carter 2bbl BBD
1969-66 273 - Carter 2bbl BBD (Holley 2bbl 2280 Replacement carbs)
1973-66 318 - Carter 2bbl BBD (Holley 2bbl 2280 Replacement carbs)
1973-72 360 - Carter 2bbl BBD (Holley 2bbl 2280 Replacement carbs)
1972-70 318 - Holley 4bbl 4160
1971 318 - Rochester2bbl 2GV
1971-69 383 - Carter 2bbl BBD
1971-69 413 - Holley 4bbl 4150
That should be just about anything you will commonly come across. Note that there are NO Edelbrock carburetors and NO Carter AFBs, only Thermoquads. Also, I'm not posting the 6000 or so list numbers that go with the carbs. I've typed enough for one day, lol. :D
