: Opinions on shocks

I am replacing my sls bags with coils. I am trying to decide on which shocks to order. Presently, I am leaning toward the MX6 since it is adjustable. Here are the pros of my main contenders.

Old Man Emu (Nitrogen)
Likely ordering their suspension so it should work in well with their coils
(If I order a different suspension the aforementioned point will be moot)

Explorer Procomp MX6 (adjustable / non-res. model)
Adjustable / Versatile
Same price as OME

Other
Who knows, you tell me.

Does anyone have any experience with the OME (if so, what valiving)?

Does anyone have any experience with the MX6?

In Australia, Koni or Bilstein get the most votes for coil sprung rovers.

I am very happy with the Bilstein shocks on my 110. I have OME rangie shocks on the rear of my IIA, but I only bought them because I got them very cheap - probably wouldn't buy them again. One started to weep slightly after a few months.

I have Bilsteins on my Disco and OMEs on Shopboy's Rangie. I'm not impressed with the Bilsteins and am very impressed with the OMEs, but I'm looking at the remote reservoir Pro-Comps for shits and grins to replace the apparently prone-to-breakage bilsteins I have.

Of the 4 OMEs that I had on the Series 88, 2 ended up toast and they all rusted up pretty badly compared to any other shock I have ever used. Switched to the Billys on the 88 and about to do the same to the RR. The 7100s are pretty!

I recently switched from Billstein to MX6 on my D90. I have a feeling they might be a bit too soft since i'm currently at 5 in Front and 6 in rear. I don't know at what level people run the adjustable Fox.

Important notes,

- I have the Jeep Valving (Medium I think)
- I also installed new bent rear link, modified rear shock mounts and front 3 link at the same time, there might be some issues there, Haven't driven the truck much since.
- I might have a Spring vs Weight vs Lift issue Since I run OME witout spacer and 35" (Not much Up travel)
- For Equivalent travel, significantly longer than FOX.

I will be able to tell you more in a few months.

Koni 4 way adjustable Heavy Tracks.... just ask Doug Walker how they held up on his D110 racing thru the desert....

OME is made by Monroe in Australia.

Yup, the Koni Heavy Tracks are the right stuff. 2" longer than the OME's, they really give my 751/755 lift a nice dose of articulation. I now have the them dialed all the way up to full stiffness now, and the ride is still comfy.

The HTs have increasing rebound at full compression which is really important if you're surprised by a wash out or obstacle on the trail when at speed. Whereas I'd bottom out often with the OMEs, with the HTs its only occasional.

About as much shock as you can put on a stock frame and towers. Next time around I'm going to install aftermarket towers and go up to the HT Raids, if my wallet allows.

So they're two inches longer than standard RRC shocks?

I've got koni front and rears at the moment. The rears are high pressure gas with four click adjustment and ride great.

But someone screwed up with the fronts.
They're twin tube rally specific, they'd survive a heavy nose first landing, but even with a heavy diesel on the front end and 180lb/in springs they still ride harsh.
It appears I can cut the shaft guard off them, unscrew the cap with a pin spanner and revalve them. But I've yet to get around to it.

The heavy-tracks with longer stroke sound very appealing, I was looking at koni shocks for an 80 series toyota or Nissan Patrol to get a similar result.

I seem unable to kill Pro-comp shocks. They are a bit rusty on the body after 2 years, but dont leak, and hold out well. They even have a lifetime guarantee(in the UK)

Anybody know anything about the Pro-Comp remote reservoirs? $139.95/ea makes them look almost as attractive as the Poly-Performance (the shocks-yeah right :flipoff2:).

I ended up ordering everything this morning so it will be here this Friday. OME kit all around. 779 up front and 762 in rear with N107 front and N108 rear. I figured I would try them and if I did not like them I could always upgrade to something more hardcore in the future. Just seemed like a great starting point for modding my Rover. Hopefully the install this weekend will go smoothly.

Hopefully the install this weekend will go smoothly.

1: drop the sway bars to make spring install much easier

2: You WILL break the shock tower retaining studs, get at least one new one.

3: Watch the brake lines when moving the axle around.
