: Opinion on which trans cooler...

Hey guys,

I am looking into fitting an aftermarket trans cooler to the Black Rangie and I wanted some opinions.

The maxiumum size I can fit would be around 6" x 24" but I can't seem to find anything like that. The longer 22 - 24" ones all seem to be 2 - 2.5" tall so I guess when it's that long it doesn't really benefit to make it taller??? Personally I would think something a bit taller say, 5 - 6" and maybe 14 - 16" wide would cool better than a tube because there is more flat surface area to take the wind. Am I correct on this? Installation should be pretty basic as I would just need to wip up some brackets and attach the lines.

The ones I have been looking at are here:

http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=transmission+cooler&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp&x=23&y=4

If anyone has a personal experience with an aftermarket one I would love to hear about it. I'm just wondering if a cooler is cooler you know?

I did a search and all I found was slade bitching about someone stealing his old cooler... :flipoff2:

Thanks for the input,

Jason

This names a few... When prices range from $24.95 to $100.00 I've got to ask, What's the main difference other than size?

I like the Flex-a-lite. I've been thinking about replacing the factory Trans cooler with that one. It has more surface area than the factory 1-pass cooler, plus it takes up only 3/4" in width and it's cheap.

I just ordered the Perma-Cool Power Steering Cooler PRM-1007 from Summit. I figure I will upgrade the trans cooler to something a litte smaller and maybe change the fans. My ultimate goal is to fit 4 inches of winch into the grill, this way my approach angle will improve.

Same here Larry, not too mention the $25.00 price tag! I am wondering about the mounting though. Some of the more expensive units have brackety built in and with the flexi model it doesn't look like there would be any other than securing zip ties to some brackets bolted up to the Rover... Thoughts?

I haven't really looked at it too much but am guessing I will fab up something to mount both the P/S cooler and transcooler so they don't sit on top of each other in front of the radiator. Probably something similiar to what you did with the fans, except as skinny as possible to allow as much air as possible to flow.

What P/S cooler are you running?

I'm installing the Perma-Cool model #1007 as seen Here (http://www.perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page15.html) . I won't be installing it until later this week. I'm hoping it will ease some of my steering issues when things get hot.

I can't help with the size issue.
But I used the B&M tranny cooler for my GMC. Very well made. Thing is huge. It has threaded fittings. I don't like the more typical barbed hose type adapters.

Jason, and Larry, did either of you consider using the frame rail coolers? I know they dont get as much airflow as one mounted uo front, but they also dont block air flow to the radiator. You might even consider running two of them, one down each frame rail. Will help by adding to the amount of fluid in the system. Hell use a 90* elbow and the 24" model on the perma cool link might even fit on a cross member (25" between rails). The 18 definately will.

Other thought is to use a frame rail cooler in conjunction with a smaller front mount.
