I am hopefully going to be looking at some 87-9? 2500-3500 SRW automatic trucks in the near future (1-2weeks) I need to get an automatic so the :girly: can drive it also. I would like to get a TH400 but am not sure exactly what they came in. Any OD trannies out their that are just as strong in this time frame...and no i don't want a 700R4. Hopeing to get a TBI 350 wtih TH400 in either 2wd or 4wd(don't care either way)
What should i look for with an automatic tranny to tell the condition? Tranny fluid to make sure it isn't burnt/smells burnt...solid shifts in all gears...??
How can you tell a TH400 from a Th350 from a 700R4(pretty sure this one is longer)?
Anything else i should look at in general? coolant leakage/smell on startup..ect ect.

The heavy 2500 & 3500 trucks of that vintage should all have TH400's or manual trannies.

TH400 tranny pan will look like the state of Texas. I believe the TH350 is a rectangular in shape.

If you get into a '9? something it may have a 4L80E, the OD version of a T400.

'91-onward has a 4L80E in place of a TH400.
Also, if your teeth rattle when it shifts... QUIT DRIVING IT! That's the 'limp mode'. Usually its a computer failure, and you can remedy the situation before the trans self-destructs.
