Before buying an axle that isn't attached to a vehicle (out of a junk yard for example), what are some basic things you can do to determine the condition it is in? Any areas in particular to pay special attention to? Axle is a Wagoneer front D44. TIA

shake it like a Cantalope...

hear if there is any loose parts inside..

knock on the diff cover and see how that sounds..

if all that checks out, then do the extraction test and your done..:flipoff2:

If you pop a stiffy, odds are it's a front 60, Rockwell or mog axle.

My best advise is to look at it! You will be able to see almost everything wrong, rotors, hubs, tie rods, u-joints. Then feel, backlash, wheelbearings, ball joints, lockouts. Then pop cover and look yet one more time, at the gears, and bearings. If you think it's fawked, it is. FNG Not the hardest thing in the world, just pretend you are looking at the one in your rig, and look for the same problems.

be sure to eyeball it for being straight, and ask the guy if he will give you your money back if it's bent. I didn't check mine well enough and now I have to drive 6 hours to swap it for another housing. the only way to know for sure if it's straight is to tear it apart and measure it.

You can always just do like me, and pick the biggest piece of junk tore up axle in the yard, that way you know your getting junk...

Know what you are going to keep, and what you are getting rid of... if it's a complete rebuild you may use nothing more than the housing, tubes and inner knuckles. If that's the case find one that has those things (straight and un-cracked) and don't worry about the rest. My front end was like that, missing a hub, bad brakes, but i didn't care, planned on replacing all that anyway, let me buy the axle for less money than I spent on gas to go get it...

alright guys, appreciate the help. This axle won't get used for awhile, so i didn't want to buy it now and then a year down the road find out it was junk the whole time. Thanks again:beer:

actually Matt, yours is the one I was considering taking a look at:beer: If you could e-mail me some pics and an idea of what you're wanting to get out of it i'd appreciate it. I've got an idea of what they go for (from talking to other people that have bought waggy axles), but we can always deal with that when the time comes.
