I just picked up a 1972 dodge 4x4 1/2 ton for free. I was wondering what kind of auto transmission these came with stock (if they did). right now it has a stick. I'm trying to swap it out because my brother was in a dirtbike accident and can't us his leg to press the clutch. I also was wondering if the rear axle is a dana 60?? I havent seen the truck yet so i'm not sure. Sorry about the stupid questions, I'm new to the fullsize wheeling world. :smokin:

Stock they came with a 727 automatic very common trans. a 904 will also fit. .. if its only a 1/2 ton it will not have a d60 in it.. 5 lugs mopar 8-3/4 rear. 8 lug Dana 60 front axle will be a Splicer 44 drum brakes. check under the rig see if its a Divorced transfercase or not. if it is way ez swap over. if not you will have too look for an Automatic adapter for it. and if its Matted let me know i need that adapter. :)

Stock it would be a divorced transfercase. I think we went over this a few weeks ago, and came to the conclusion that the 727 in the trucks were a special short tailshaft version. I don't think the 904 was ever made in a short version, but in any case, get a 727, the 904 is weak in comparison. You may have to have a new intermediate shaft made, or you could just by a mated trans and transfer and swap in the whole deal. Just make sure you get the crossmember for the mated trans and transfer. Then sell your crossmembers to the guy with the thread about divorced transfer crossmembers. In the long run, unless you can also get all the parts for free, or dirt cheap, you may be better off just selling the truck and buying one with an automatic already in it since they are common. I searched forever to find my 2 '74 4 speed 4x4s. 1 in 30 I looked at were 4 speeds, the rest were automatics.

Should be the common 5 on 5.5" circle, like the 80's Dodges and most Fords. From '75 to about '80 Dodge used the small bolt pattern, but yours should be the large pattern like my '74.
