i picked up a 79 scout today. got it for free!!! it has a 345/727/dana 20.plus someone put fullsize chevy 1/2 axles under it. the 727 need gone through but the motr runs awesome and the transfer case seems ok. my questions are what performance is out there for the 345 and the 727? is it worth it to swap in a new motor/tranny like a small chevy or chrysler? never have worked on a IH but know ALOT of farmers who said they know IH stuff. is it the same? i hope to put fullsize dana 60s(probly dodge) under it and some 38's. will the dana20 hold up with the 1-ton stuff and the 345? also what stuff can you get for these in general(i.e. body, cage, performance) this wont be a street legal rig so no worrys on legality. if i cant find n e thing on buildn these ill have to stick with my chevy! i hope not though, this has way more rockcrawln ability. any help is appreciated

Many of your questions can be answered with some search time, as most have been covered a few times over the years. However since searching sucks you may also find it useful/faster to just flip through the past pages of tech and look at past threads with interesting tittles.
Short answer:
345 is a good motor, not a huge aftermarket, but doesn't really need one. Headers, cam shafts etc are available, but stock is a good starting point. Its a low RPM, bullet-proof HD industrial motor, not a SBC. There are (2) stock 4-barrel manifolds available (square and spread bores). No aftermarket manifolds... yet.
The 727 is the same as the Chrysler version, just in its own IH specific case, so all the tranny upgrades that you can get for a 727 can be used.
As for the axles and cage stuff... search around, just about every combination has been tried/done. Just like every other rig out there, they take work to get under there, and there are many ways to go about it.

figured it out. gonna rebuild the 727, freshen up the 345, and leave the 20 alone for now. puttin in some 60s and runnin 38"-39.5"s.now my questions are about the body and the front axle. i was searching and seen stuff about puttin 80/800 bodys on a sII frame. how hard is this? whats involved? also, gonna buy a front 60 soon, should i go with a chevy or a dodge, i mean, which fits under easier? i know the dodges have a skinnier pad width, just wonderin. im gonna stick with the stock springs and longer shackles. should make a fun project

Look at a Scout II frame. Look at a 80/800 frame. The answer should be self-explanatory.
