I'm looking for my 1st FJ40 and I came across this one not far from where I live. It's a '74 from So Cal that was brought up to Oregon a few years back, this guy has owned it for three years. He doesn't know the mileage on the vehicle or engine and it doesn't have a speedo. It has the original 6 cyl engine but he put a 4spd tranny in it. Rust free except for a couple surface spots where the paint was scratched off, ect. He says it has 4:10 gears and it's lifted with a spring over lift on those 36" swampers. It needs a speedo, a fuel gauge, and an alignment. It's also been converted to disc brakes in the front. I haven't seen this in person yet, I just want to know what you guys think it's worth and if it'd be a good first FJ40 for me. He's asking $4500.

That dash cluster is hideous. Check under that diamond plate for rust. I think it's worth $4500, but a 2F pushing 36s with 4.1 gears is going to be very slow.

That's an F..

I would not pay 4500 for that rig..

I get the feeling the wiring is scary to say the least..

Hey I said the exact thing about the instrument cluster WTF did it have a Chevy V-*, and it was converted back? It's been my experience that the the diamond plate on the quarters is hiding some serious rust also the rocker panel plates are doing the same thing. What's the cylinder with the yellow thing at the end. For 4500 I'd want it as much as stock as possible. Also, if it is an F engine it has a smaller displacement than the 2f, was it ever rebuilt? Also the brake master looks like there is no fluid. Kaveat emptor I saw that in a Brady Bunch episode.

My guess would be there are some major rust problems. Take a look at the spare - all the diamondplate and the surface rust under the hood. Wiring will be a nightmare, what's up with the rearend? New gasket goo all over - why?

What's the engine compression like? I wouldn't give more that $3000 and if you plan to make it a daily driver get ready to drop $5000 in it. :shaking:

I would move on and look for a stock cruiser, no mistakes to fix and it can all be done correctly.

Seems like way to much jerry rig going on there. Take the info over to cascade cruisers forum and see if anyone knows it on there. Probably rusted out, poor wiring, and for that instrument cluster alone like $4000 should be deducted :barf: If the interior is that scary and the thing is rusted out and covered who knows how the spring over was done. Much better options at cheaper prices around here. Check the truck trader and cascade cruisers, they are a good bunch and could help steer you in the right direction.

I have to agree the dash drops its value except for the cracker head that put it in. If you are looking for a wheeler it has promise. I would look real close at how the SOA was done. If you can find out who did it that would help a lot. SOA is the best lift if done right. Around here a SOA starts around $1600 to be done right. The 4spd swap was an easy one as this is a late year 74’ (Has the OE roll bar) This means it most likely has the transitional year 3spd t-case sporting the fine spline drive gear. (Just a bolt up swap for a 4spd in this case) Diamond plate usually has issues behind it, if not at first it will most likely now. (Traps water)

The F motor, ehe I would look at the compression and then what it has for a carb and distributor. I would ask questions like why has it not been registered for over 2 years? (also means its been in Oregon for at least 4 years) Sitting usually means something mechanical took it out for awhile. Was this a toss it back together to sell it thing.

HOLY HUGE PICS BATMAN !!

if its something you really have your heart set on buying then 3k would be TOP dollar to pay in my opinion. thats assuming the rust (if present) isnt too bad... does he have the other guages to match the ones that are in there now? making another cluster that looks better shouldnt be too hard however a matching speedo assembly will probley cost a bit...
good luck

Yeah, that wiring is gonna be trashed. I see home wiring nuts being used, and that green wire under the hood isn't strapped down to anything. Looks like there's some bling in the gauges (the oil pressure warning light, etc), but damn if it's worth any money in resale.

I'd pass...
