This happened before but just went away. The truck is running fine all day. Then When I start it up again it will run then die. The truck will run if I give it gas but dies when I stop.

Check the idle cut off soleniod. It should have 12V to it when the ignition is on. If it does, connect it to the solenoid(on the carb, not sure it '79 has it) and you should hear a clicking noise when connecting/disconnecting.
