For all of you who posted that you made it or know of a couple of friends who made it it all the way through this year need to check yourself. I just made the trip (6/2 to 6/5) from Loon Lake to Tahoe expecting to see tracks in the snow from all of the so called first groups. No tracks what so ever. We were the first ones through and ther is still alot of off camber snow drifts that need to melt considerably prior to making the trip a wheeling experience vs a winching trip from the shelf above Cadillac all the way out to Tahoe. The trip from Loon to the Springs was wet but snow was not a factor. It was actually a nice trip with out trash or traffic on the trail but we based our trip on the feed back we got from this web site about people already making it through. Carefull what you write especially if you dont know what you are talking about.

Glad you made it through, and hope you trod lightly, but first tracks for the year?

C'mon, man, you've got to get up there pretty darn early after New Years to lay certain claim to that.

Snow melts, man. With successive snowfall and snowmelt cycles, tracks get covered over and melted back flat if left undisturbed for a few days. I went over the summit a few years back in '99 on a late snow June, and the snow looked fresh but I knew the Marauder 'Cruiser club has been on it the previous weekend...

Above, that's me stuck on the crest of the 15' snowbank that both trucks ended up winching over.

Thanks for the trail report, tho.

Randii,
Trip was awesome and dont want to take anything away from any of the first to complete the trail from new years to now, but can gaurentee that the most recent posts of people talking about how they just made the trip are false. Live in Truckee and know the snow. We saw plenty of tracks, none made by humans. Tread lightly was definitely the goal and look forward to a great season of wheeling.

I know the snow well too and it is true that tracks can melt down this time of year and be decieving. Not saying you are wrong but I have made tracks and gone back and seen them but they looked very old not the days I knew them to be.

Congrats on your trek. I know personally how daunting it can be. I was just thinking this morning that I should make the trek before Rubithon this next week. Maybe I still will. A couple Q's though. How was Miller Creek and the mud hole bypass we put in last year? And did you stay true to the trail on the drifts or go around stuff?

Cruzila,
The mud hole go around was so filled with off camber snow that we stayed to the left and hit the giant hole with a much straighter approach. Super deep but less chance of roll over.

Dude you truely are CLUELESS. You made "first tracks" with 35's?? Do a search for snow and my user name and you'll find you are terribly mistaken on the first tracks idea. First since last weekend, likely... for the year, not a chance.

Settle down Aggro, as stated earlier, not trying to take any fame away from you, just happy to have made it through the whole trail. Fresh tracks are fresh track and if it snowed the night before to cover someone else's tracks then that is the beauty of snow... more fresh tracks. As of last weekend we made fresh tracks, not first tracks since I believe those were made by covered wagons.

I have been thinking about this and remember following Aggros "tracks" about a day after he was up for the day. That was early May? Anyway, the marks were flat and we only saw stripes. Coming back that same day our tracks we left were almost flat  Springtime snow changes hourly for sure.
