Searched, but could not find this topic. What are you all doing for the lower grease fitting (talking 404 axles). I sheared off the lower grease fitting last night. One of my lower "kingpin caps" (or what ever they are called) was loose a while back, seems to just unscrew. What happens if I unscrew it all the way (any springs in there come flying off or anything :D). Anyway, I'd like to drill that cap for a grease fitting in a different location (off the center of the "cone"), if that is possible. A new grease fitting will only get sheared off again.

Remove and replace. You can put a lower profile Zirk on it if you want.

James if the lower kinpin cap unscrews tighten it up and then rebend over the locking washer that holds it on. The grease fitting are very common take one down to you parts store and see if they have any.

Thanks Don,

I did tighten it, but what I'm concernd with is that grease fitting is going to bust on every run. Am I the only one that thinks it won't happen all the time? Anyway, what happens if I remove that lower cap all the way off. I'd really like to move that grease fitting off the top of the cone if possible.

I've never busted one on the trail - only when moving the axle/knuckle around the garage. It's tucked closely enough in to the tires (I'm running 38s) that I haven't had an issue.

It will happen eventually, but in ~20 runs, no issues yet, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I have broken one, in fact I never fixed it, they are hard to hit, but you can do it. You can always just put a plug in the hole, and just install the grease fitting for lubing. I think I have lubed my 404 twice in 5 yrs. They hold grease well.
