Tony, I had the same problem before I installed a lift, castor corrected radius arms, trailing arms, etc. I was told by Alan at Cityside Garage in Mass. that some Rovers have the noise and others don't. I removed the 3rd member and brought it to Alan and he replaced the inner and outer pinion bearings, seal, shim, space and set the backlash, it worked. No more noise.

Hope this helps.

Well after:
x2new front propshafts
x1 new rear propshaft
x1 replacment transfer box
x1 replacment front diff
x3 crawler box removals (testing)
new suspension bushes
rebuilt handbrake
different prop phasing tried
The vibration stayed.
Enter a Bluddy good bloke "Rod" AKA Roddy from here
Double cardan prop fitted
90 driven to national speed limits + or - a bit
NO VIBRATIONS WHATSOEVER ALL GONE NOTHING NOT A BLUDDY THING, YES YOU READ THIS CORRECTLY

So if you have +2 lift and castor correction arms (mine are QT BTW) and you have vibration on overrun above 60mph
I strongly suggest you fit a double cardan prop as the first thing you try.

Thanks to all for suggestions/assistance.

Glad you got it fixed.
Even though you got new shafts, where they custom built and balanced or off the shelf bits? Did you ever get the balance on them double checked?

While I agree that a DC shaft is awsome, I have both shafts set up that way, the change in lift can agrevate an unbalanced shaft.
When I first lifted the Rover I had the rear shaft balance checked, and it was out. Getting the balance corrected solved the problem.
I went to the DCs when I did the drive train mods, needed new shafts just made sense to get good ones made up.

Tony: Looking at you old set up it appears that the U-joints are out of sync.
That might cause some of the vibration. The new set up has the u-joints is the correct plane.

I tried the UJ's in every possible phase but with no effect,
the pic shows the standard phase for TD5 Defender propshafts
as supplied, it was brand new genuine one.
the Double cardan runs as sweet as I could hope for.

On the front DS the flanges are not supposed to face the same direction, on the rear they are.

The TD5 props are phased 45 degrees to each other in the workshop manual and on every TD5 defender sold.

Tony can you mail me a few pics from the rear mounting of your front crossmember? Think I'm going to move it back then. But have the make the mounting, because 2 bolts holding it probably won't be enough....
