Just wondering what motors you guys might suggest if I looked @ doing a Ford fuel injection as opposed to a sbc. Let me know! Thx Ray

351W. I love mine. I have a Q-jet on mine now and it is great. You can always swap the EFI off of a Mustang onto it as well, you just have to buy a intake.

I'm probably the only one who would suggest this– the EFI'd F@rd 300 six is a great running engine that came in basic versions of F150s and full size Broncos. If I were to go F@rd in a Cruiser, I would favor the six for the extra weight it would put over the front axle for traction, especially when climbing. I'm a big fan of heavy sixes in FJ40s. I don't know if the adapters exist to make F@rd 300 feasible. Never researched it.

OTOH, for sheer fun, the new Shelby 500s come with a kick@$$, supercharged 351 (5.4l) that puts out 450hp. Zoom zoom.

You can also get lots of performance parts for 300 sixes from clifford. A buddy of mine has an f150 beater with a 300 six that's all hopped up. Tons of torque. The mustang 5.0 motors are nice too, and you can get conversion wire harnesses for them.

351 and 5.4 liter doesn't compute, Walt. 5.4=329 inches, 351=5.8 liters.

The most common you are going to find is a 302. It's a great reliable motor with a ton of upgrades. I would recommend stroking it for more torque.

A stroked 302 is a 351. Both engines are identical except the 351 has a taller deck height and longer stroke. Everything that will bolt on a 302 will bolt on a 351 except the intake, which you can buy aftermarket or use an EFI truck intake but they are tall so most people dont use them for swaps.

I have the bell housing (Lakewood) you need if you plan on doing a ford v8 swap,
shoot me an e-mail if interested.

I'm old school. How does that justify your inability to do math!! I don't get it.... :)

Sort of..

There are differences.

A 347 (or something like that) is the common 302 stroker..

I am actually tempted to put a 5.0 and c6 that I have siting around in my FJ60..

It doesn't. I meant because I grew up knowing F@rd engines by CI displacement; i.e., 289s, 302s, and 351s; it never occured to me, as I posted about the newer 5.4l, that there was a F@rd engine block with a displacement between 302/5.0 and 351. Thanks to Rat70FJ, this old dog just learned a new trick.

You know about old dogs learning new tricks, don'tchya dog walker? :D

Yup, thanks to the Mustang crowd. Probably the easiest route, but I'd like your opinion. Would an unstroked 302 be able to easily muscle a full-bodied Cruiser's weight up mountain grades? Even with 5.0 EFI?

Come to think of it, I'm asking this because I've never talked with an FJ owner that went with a 302/5.0.

The 302 is a fine motor in a 40. I have one in the 40 I'm driving right now. Previous owner of the Previous owner deal. I'll admit I wouldn't have chose a Ford powerplant if I would have done it, but it works and it works well. It has a t18 4 speed which is similar to a SM465 for gearing and a Dana 18 transfer case. Which matches the offset Cruiser axles. It has plenty of power and I've never felt as though the front end was too light. It all depends upon how the motor is set in. The drivelines are plenty long and only 1/2" different front to rear. The distributor up front is nice. You can reach everything without any problems. This motor is actually a Ford truck application. I think the 302s in Mustangs would be higher reving than the truck applications. I think it has plenty of torque.

well I just posted about a 302 swap and It is my engine of choice for a few reasons. The mustang application will rev well, it makes 225 horses in stock trim and gobs of torque. The 2f the the cruiser came with moves it pretty well and It seems that an engine that has more hp and torque could only move it better. The 350 uses more gas. I have owned both engines in vehicle with similar gearing. I felt the 302 was snappier on the throttle. approximately the same parts availability.

and gobs of torque. .

How much is gobs and at what rpm. Low is the key unless you're running compound transfers.

the 302 produces 275 ft/lbs at 2000rpm and 300 at 3k. Plenty to move the cruiser. About 230 ft/lbs at 1300 rpm.
