I need 3.5" long studs for my steering knuckle that are 9/16", 18, and fine thread. Anyone have a part # or a place to buy them? Doing a high steering set up. I know the GM factory # is 3965137, but I can't find a # for the extended studs...

Do a search for ARP and you will see a post from Eric Ruhl asking the same question. At the end of the thread, he found what you are looking for.

I just used 9/16 fine thread grade 8 bolts, havn't had a problem with them, is this a bad idea for some reason?

I did the same thing when I couldnt find longer studs. Do see how it would be a problem.

IF you use the grade 8 bolts which I did as well, You want to locktight them in, The cone washers work well, but for added safty I locktighted mine in.

Also you want to be aware of how much thread contact you have, Mine are right at the end of the threads.

Since you ask, I see two problems withusing bolts instead of studs.

#1 If the bolt comes loose then the cone washers are loose (big difference from studs an nuts). And if the bolts walk out then the steering arm is coming off or the arm will break the bolts.

#2 The knuckles shouldn't have a bolt going in and out of the threads often. You might start to comprimise the female threads in the knuckle. I just don't think its kosher.

To deal with problem #1 (in addition to locktight) I would drill a little hole through each of the bolt heads and run some wire going through all three heads.
