View Full Version : D44 strength vs d60
I run a 44 front in my early bronco w/lock rite, keep breaking the l/h axle u-joint. Is it worth the money to go to ctm's or should I save for a d60??? I don't have a top or doors, so it's not a heavy rig.

speaking from experience, if you have big tires and a heavy foot dont put a whole lot in the 44. i did, actually about 2200 bucks for gears/lockers/chromoly's/ctm's and mis. other shit. however i have only broken 1 stub shaft with 39.5's in a year, its strong, but a 60 could be had for about the same price and be built a hella lot stonger in the long run. just my .2$

buddy of mine has a ford hpd60 from a 79 f350, brand new everything, detroit, gears, chromoly inners, 35 spline lockouts, bearings, kingpins, brakes for 2500.00. needs stub shafts and high steer arms.

60 and be done with it.
you can dump all your $ into your 44 and then have no room to upgrade WHEN you break it.

Look at what your goals for your rig are. If it's over 36-37" tires and you have a heavy foot than get a dana 60. A stock early bronco 44 had small "dana 30" 260 Spicer u-joints so that's alot of the problem. You can upgrade those u-joints with 297 or better yet 760 Spicer u-joints in the stock shafts, or get 4340 alloy shafts and CTMs or OX u-joints. I think you should work with your stock 44 in your bronco and just upgrade it a bit, especially getting rid of those small "Spicer 260 u-joints", just going to 297 sized ones will be a decent upgrade around 20% or so from stock.

Sounds like a 60 is the way to go, I would like to buy your friends 60, but I'm going to try and find one locally, thanks.
I run 36" swampers and I'm usually being stupid when it breaks, I 'm running the bigger joints already. I've heard superiors and ctms is my next progression???

I have Yukon 4340 shafts and 760s for my 44 and it's been fine so far. my rig is not very heavy, it still has a stockish v6 (4.3) and I'm not heavy on the stupid pedal. :grinpimp:

weight is only part of the situation, tire size, hp, and what i think is one of the most important tranny. a manual tranny will eat them up with a agressive 36. you can keep it together a lot better with an automatic. it will still pop with out some serious $$$$
