Man arrested in Barstow after chase through river

BARSTOW -- In the month-long pursuit to catch a man suspected of stealing several vehicles and racing parts, authorities got what they were looking for, and then some.
Several agencies have been working together to identify and arrest suspects in connection with a rash of car burglaries.
As they honed in on Joseph Trexler -- who was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of his connection to the thefts -- they arrested some 35 others, according to Detective Sgt. Mark Franey of the Barstow Police Department said Wednesday.
Throughout their search for Trexler, authorities have chased him from Hinkley to Rialto and Arizona to Apple Valley. Nearly each time they served a search warrant for Trexler or pursued him in some way, the people he had been staying with were suspected of and arrested for various crimes.
"(Today) was kind of the finale for us with the problems Trexler's been causing us," Franey said.
He was referring to a raid on a residence in Apple Valley, the most recent arrest in the pursuit of recovering stolen goods. Only one woman, Sharon Dennis, 34, of Daggett was arrested for a traffic warrant, but police did recover drugs, drug paraphernalia and the rest of the stolen goods they traced back to an April 1 vehicle theft that they suspect Trexler was involved in.
"What happened today was kind of minute as far as a search warrant goes, but it did help us get some more of the racing materials back that are valued at several thousands of dollars," Franey said.
In Barstow on Tuesday, Trexler was located and additional units were requested to follow him and after a long chase through the Mojave River, Trexler was arrested. Franey said he'll be charged with auto theft, possession of stolen property, embezzlement and numerous felony evading charges.
The long quest for Trexler resulted in:
* The separate arrests of at least five juveniles in connection with auto thefts in the Barstow area.
* The discovery of a suspected "chop shop" for disassembling stolen vehicles in Hinkley.
* The arrests of four adults at a Hinkley home for methamphetamine possession.
