: Axle housing question.....

I just found out that one side of my axle housing is "wallowed" out. It is an model 20 rearend, short track(46.5" from bleeder to bleeder, I believe). The shop putting it together, with one piece axles, just called and told me there is too much play on one side when he was test fitting the bearing.

My question is, do they make an over sized bearing for this application? Or can it be built up? He told me that they dont make over sized bearings and that if he tried to build it up, he could not quarantee if it would last.

There is a 4x4 shop in Wichita and I called them and they told me that had an axle housing and it would run 200 dollars. Is that a good price? They told me that they normally ship them for 250. But since I am willing to drive up there, I could get it for 2 bills.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am becoming very frustrated with all the setbacks I am having getting my Jeep back on the road.

$200 for a narrow track AMC20 is BS. And thats only for a damn housing!!

I wish more of you guys lived closer. I have one (complete shoe-to-shoe) I would be willing to let go for $50. One less headache for me.

Check here for guys willing to let one go. Hell I got one for free once. Check on www.CJOffRoad.Com as well.

What is funny, is that I offered the guy 150 since I will come and get it and he said no, cause we ship them for 250 all over the US. But right here...

he has one for 150 and says if you pick it up, then you get it for that, no shipping. What a prick. I am gonna call him on it tomorrow. He should give it to me for 50 or 100, just cause he lied over it.

well now that your amc 20 is all f***** it is time to put in a better axle,
try a built up ford 9in or a built up dana 44,
if you plan on running any tires bigger then 40in go with a dana 60.

if you want a real good amc 20 with full float axles, detroit, 4.11 gears, drum brakes, i can sell you mine it would come off a semi working jeep. $800.00 and you pay shipping. parts cost much more that the cost here.
i will even through in a set of one pece axles.

If I would not have already spent the money on one piece axles, I would do something differnt. I cannot justify just tossing those aside and going another route now.

And I imagine the wife would flip if I spent 800 right now, so I cannot really take you up on that off. Thanks though.

If you know he is dishonest, which you do now, I would never buy from him. Not to teach him a lesson, but for the simple fact that you don't know if the parts he will be selling you will be good. He may lie about that too.

I would bring up your discovery to him if you feel the need, but buy elswhere. I think that even $150 is too much--especially for just a housing.
