Engine size? Tire size? Gears? Rocks? Mud? Jumping? Mud Drags? Bolt pattern of the front? etc...

Ford 8.8 from a late model explorer. Same width, easy to find BP, 31 spline shafts, disc brakes , trac lock and 4.10 all from the factory. just kinda hard to find.

IIRC some mid 80's Chevy duallys have a narrow Dana 60 FF that will fit real nice under any Jeep. A friend of mine bought one of these narrow 60s at a wrecking yard that was going out of buisness for under $300. It's going under his YJ.

FWIW I like my narrow track AMC20.
I'm not a rockcrawler and after all the upgrades (Trussing is last mod to do) it should do great for me. The narrow track is just preference since I have always lived near/in forested areas and the narrow tracks get in-between trees easier.
Most guys that are more hardcore need stronger differentials. And no, I'm not referring to the Dana 44--the AMC20 vs Dana44 has been beat to death.

IMHO the shaved 14 bolt is the Ultimate axle for anything over 37 inch tires, the C&C is a good width....not for everyone.
The 9 inch ford for anything smaller. I have had both and loved them.

OK my bad, i left a few things out!!
-planning on 37's no larger
-Factor 304, but I have a 360 to put in it, just needs rebuilding
-uses---want a very streetable rig, but used for rock and light mud in tellico
-a good all around axle
-I have a D44 from a 78 waggy witht the 6 bolt, but I can change the pattern on the ft or back.
-gears, i'll probably go 4.88 and a spool rear lock-rite front
Any one used a exploder 8.8 and ordered new or redrilled the rear axles to a new pattern??? what about the rotors?

If you're going to regear, why not just keep the 6-lug and get the matched set of waggy axles? Wheels cant be as expensive as all that

I have the rear waggy diff but it is an offset rear D44 and I just want to go ahead and beef up the rear a little more than that, but mainly I just dont really like the offset rear. Yeah I know it no biggy, but I just dont like it. If I wanted to keep the D44, I would keep the WT M20 thats in it now and truss it!! Other than the tubes it's just as stout ass the D44( if nit a little better, you know that its the same centersection that is used in Hummers{not H@'s that ar not really hummers})
any way, I just wanted to get a feel of what people have had success with!!

Under 37's Id say Either a 8.8 or dana 44's out of a wagoneer. you might get away with 44's with your 37's if your light on the throttle in the rocks, otherwise I would intall some cromie shafts or run bigger diffs such as a ford 9 like I got. nines are cheap unless you want to narrow and convert to discs, d44's are more affordable to conver to discs. 8.8's can come with discs.

If you've already got a 6 lug, and don't want the waggy offset rear, look into an Isuzu Rodeo Dana44. It's about the right width (app 58"), has six lug pattern, and can be found with disc brakes, posi, and 4.10s. These axles are fairly easy to come by, and not very expensive, I got mine for $200, though I've seen em sell as low as $150.

Ditto, but would like to emphasize not to use the 14bolt on anything less than 37. I have one on 39.5s and it is still an anchor. There could be some improvement in a shave, but that dif is just too big for smaller tires. I would say a 9 or a 60, assuming you would build the 9.

I wold like to get a feel for peoples opinion on the D60 rear!
yota ifs rear. good width, light, strong, matching BP, tons of aftermarket support, easy disc swap. seems simple really! I got one in my buggy with 37" reds. No problems.

all you have to do is look at most of the peoples rigs on here. i think the d60 is the favorite for most.

TaDua...prefered...go for the bigger spline, some of the older ford D60 were 16 spline, allright if you want to run chrommies you can upgrade to bigger spline shafts, if you do get them at the same time as you get you locker to match...ps there all wide, so you will have to narrow or replace front with full width.

any toy rear that came in a IFS 4wd truck will be one to snag. The width will be right on for what your looking for. Lots of aftermarket support for this axle, aftermarket axles, disc brake conversions, electric locker's are readily swapped in. it's 6 lug, which is what your looking for.
asfas as yota rear lasting with 37's go hangout in the toy 4runner and p/u forum. you'll definetly find your answers there.

A friend of mine has a 300HP 350 Chev in his Yota and is running 35s. He has destroyed every Toyota axle he has put behind it, he has shattered dana 44s. He finally settled on a 9 inch and only replaces gears occasionally. He has a very heavy foot on the throttle.

I have a '59 CJ5 with 35's. I twisted the splines on my 44 (30 spline)
I built an HP60 out of an 88 F350. I built my own jig & welded 9" outers & went 35 spline axles & ARB. I plan on going up to 37" tires & shaving the axle 'cause it is an anchor.
